St. Ludmila’s Academy Opens New School Year

On Monday morning registration opened the school year for St. Ludmila’s Academy and classes resumed Tuesday September 9. Enrollment is good across all grades, with the eleventh grade now the largest. Through courtesy of Mr. Auld and the Shiner School Board, academy boys may register for Agriculture Courses at Shiner High School earning credits.

Marie Jirkovsky former Shiner resident dies at 84

Mrs. Marie Jirkovsky, 84, a pioneer of Shiner and long time resident of Shiner and Sweet Home, died Saturday at her daughter’s home in Floresville. Born Marie Vesely in the old country, she came 52 years ago and helped Shiner grow. She was a devout Catholic and K J Z T member. Survived by two sons Frank of Austin and John of Shiner, four daughters and numerous grandchildren. Funeral Mass at Eschenburg Parlor and Shiner Catholic Cemetery with Rev. E Bily officiating. pallbearers were her grandsons. Our sincere sympathy to the bereaved.

Death of Alfred J Helweg Shiner and Refugio figure

Alfred J. Helweg aged 43 years 9 months 11 days died in Refugio from cerebral hemorrhage after two days illness. A Shiner native who worked for an oil company in Refugio for seven years he leaves three brothers and four sisters and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held in Shiner with Rev. R Schuetze officiating.

Obituary: Paul Barak of Dickson County Dies at 67

Paul Barak, longtime Dickson school community resident and Spanish American War veteran, died Saturday afternoon in Shiner hospital at age 67. Funeral held Monday from the family home with services at Moulton Catholic Church, interment in Moulton Catholic Cemetery. Survived by wife, two sons Emil and Vladik, and two daughters Laura and Janie.

Death of Jacob Mraz 86 in Hallettsville rites held

Jacob Mraz aged 86 died at his Hallettsville Route 4 home at 2 30 PM on September 4 1941. Born in Europe July 25 1855 he immigrated to the U S in 1889 settling in Lavaca County and married Annie Jakes in 1891. Funeral services were conducted from Route 4 Hallettsville and Sweet Home Catholic Church with pallbearers named. He survived by his wife Annie, daughter Mrs Henry Zacharias, sister Mrs Jacob Ludowik, four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Stevenson proposes road bond servicing plan in Texas special session

Governor Coke Stevenson carried his compromise plan on road bond servicing to the Texas Legislature during a special session. He spoke before a joint session of both houses in Austin at 1 pm and received a prolonged standing ovation as he concluded with a direct appeal to lawmakers, many of whom are longtime friends.

ShinER High School Opens 1941-42 Year in Shiner

The 1941-42 school year opened September 8 with a full auditorium. The Shiner High School Band conducted by H. C. Cammack performed for the occasion. Boy Scouts led the pledge and raised the U.S. and Texas flags. Supt. Auld welcomed the School Board and faculty and urged support for education. Mrs. Hu Koether, P T A president, invited parents to join. Miss Edna Reischl introduced beginners. Nearly 300 students registered, with more expected this week.

Achievement Day Honors Students With Culinary Exhibit

Monday afternoon at 3 30 the Home Economics Club hosted a refreshment course tied to Achievement Day. Fifteen high school girls earned an extra half credit by completing summer vacation projects. About seventy five visitors praised the work as refreshments were served.

Mrs. Sara Roosevelt Dies at 86 in Hyde Park

Mrs. Sara Delano Roosevelt 86, mother of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, died at 10:15 a.m. at the Hyde Park estate after an acute circulatory collapse. Born September 21, 1854 to Warren Delano, she married James Roosevelt in 1880 and lived to see her son become president.

Schulenburg Grabs Final Playoff Chance Over Brewers

Schulenburg Jaycees defeated the Shiner Brewers 7 to 3 on the local diamond to put Schulenburg in position for the final playoff round. Baker pitched well but luck ran against him as Shiner stranded 15. Herbert Ullman hit a deep left center homer for Shiner as Meitzen allowed 11 hits. Hallettsville outlasted Victoria 3 to 2 in 12 innings and will open a three game series with Schulenburg starting Sunday.

Army recruiting visit to Shiner Friday afternoon

Sergeant John L. Marx, Army recruiting officer, will interview young men at the Shiner post office from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm Friday September 12. He notes 100000 skilled technicians are trained annually in Army technical schools to support the Air Corps and other branches. Only volunteers enlisting for three years qualify for training, with vacancies in Hawaii the Philippines and the United States.

Cotton and weather shape varied local crop outlook

With 1 166 bales weighed to Tuesday night the cotton outlook is mixed. Ginners and farmers expect about a three fourths crop but higher cotton and seed prices may offset the shortfall. Corn yields also vary from best in years to poor. One and one eighth inches of rain fell with a strong wind north of town but no real damage reported. The rain helps fall gardens.
