Notes and comments recall Shiner Texas dining prowess at the Sept. 3 Catholic Picnic with dinner at noon and supper at five. Bohemian, German, Slavic and Moravian families gather, all U.S. citizens, praised for cuisine as a symbol of local culture.
The Wesley Ible Class hosts a rummage sale at the Old Post Office building. Doors open 10:00 a.m. and close 3:00 p.m. Donations accepted at the building early Saturday morning.
The Guadalupe Valley Electric Co op board approves a 119 258 patronage refund to more than 10 000 GVEC members who were served during 1953. Checks go out in December as part of annual non profit credits. The refund brings total disbursements to 676 265 over all years and reflects improved efficiency and lower cost per kilowatt hour.

Dismissed patients include Mrs William F Sanders Mrs Marvin Filip and baby girl Mrs Milton Mueller and baby girl Mrs Glade Welhausen Frankie August Kubecka.
Frank A Adamek 56 died August 30 1961 at Hallettsville Hospital He was born October 27 1904 in Lavaca County a lifelong resident of Rt 2 Yoakum and a prominent farmer Services were held September 1 at Buffington Chapel Yoakum and 10 00 am at St Ann s Catholic Church Burial was in St Ann s Catholic Cemetery Rosary was recited September 8 00 pm at the chapel Survivors include his wife Mary Peters Adamek two sons Weyman and Donald both of Yoakum his mother Mrs Caroline Adamek three brothers Joseph of Shiner Johnny of San Antonio and Charley of Kerrville and three sisters Mrs Annie Lahodny of Shiner Mrs Louis Bartos and Mrs Jane Goodson both of San Antonio
Postmaster Arthur Ward announced rural carriers will distribute 1961 Acreage Survey Cards starting around September 14. The survey, conducted jointly by the Post Office and U S Agriculture Department, collects farmer reports to estimate Texas crop acreage for 1961 harvest. Carriers Gilbert A. Kasper Edgar P. Kram and Thomas B. Hughs will deliver and collect cards.
The first meeting of Lavaca County Democrats who joined the Republican Party will be in Hallettsville District Court Room at 8:00 p.m. on September 7. Speaker will be Jack Porter of Houston with Mickey Leddrick of San Antonio and Bill Lehrer of Garwood presenting. Mayor M. I. Bozka will MC and invites Shiner-area friends.
Father G Kuratko and parishioners invite all to the Sweet Home Picnic on Sunday September 17. A family style dinner features turkey fried chicken beef stew and homemade cakes pies kolaches. Carnival bazaar and music by Konvicka's Worthing Band provide day and night entertainment with a free dance.
At the SS Cyril and Methodius Church picnic on Sunday September 3 at Legion Park the cotton sale raised funds. Buyers included First National Bank Chas Matejka Houston Farmers Coop with multiple bales priced from 69 to 100 cents per pound. Ginners Farmers Coop Buske Community and Vrana Gins supplied bales free of charge.
Shiner Comanches open 1961 season with a 26 12 victory over Sacred Heart Indians halting a 20 game Sacred Heart win streak. Eugene Vaclavik threw two scoring passes to Ervin Berger and ran for a touchdown with key blocks from Billy Winkenwerder and supporting defense. Frankie Kubecka returned a kickoff for a score but was nullified by a foul.
C B Welhausen and Co announces a sale of merchandise at greatly reduced prices beginning Friday September 8 in the Wolters Bros dry goods building.
The Department of Public Safety announced Labor Day weekend traffic deaths at seventeen, far below the DPS forecast of thirty. Homer Garrison Jr. said if this rate holds for the year, 1962 may show fewer fatalities than 1961, which had the record low. The count covered midnight Friday to Monday midnight.
Last Saturday Pohler's Super Market awarded prizes to eight winners including Mrs. Joe Baros who took a floor polisher and Mrs. Chas Kurtz Jr. who won an electric percolator. Bes sie Netardus and others captured items such as electric fry pans electric can openers and grocery certificates.
Funeral services for the Rev. Father Joseph Kopp longtime pastor of St. Josephs Catholic Church in Moulton were held at the church. He died Friday September 1 at Wagner Memorial Hospital in Shiner age 79. Ordained in 1902 in Alsace he served in Buffalo New York before coming to Texas in 1909 serving Koerth Ammannsville Hoston Fayette County and Moulton. He guided St. Josephs through the 1924 church building and 1954 school establishment. Burial was in Moulton Catholic Cemetery.
Funeral services for Mrs. Arthur Baker a 49 year old Cuero woman were held at Buffington Funeral Home and St Josephs Catholic Church Yoakum with burial at St Josephs Cemetery She died after injuries from a Thursday night beating at the Hotz house while her husband is jailed on a first degree murder charge Autopsy performed Friday in Yoakum list injuries including a fractured skull Survivors include husband two daughters a son and several relatives filed in Yoakum and Victoria Cost and Germany serving paratrooper son in Germany and other family members
The Texas Department of Public Safety says a legislative fee hike takes effect September 1. The operator license rises from $2 to $3 for two years, commercial license from $3 to $4.50 for one year, and chauffeur license from $4 to $6 per year, while duplicate licenses stay 25 cents.
The Lutheran Welfare Society of Texas sold the seven decade old Green-Dickson residence in Shiner to H. G. Schwabe for 2900 dollars. The house and garage will be moved within the city to clear the block for Trinity Lutheran Home for the Aged. The 400000 dollar capital funds campaign for Shiner construction continues with expected momentum.
Robert M Waldman of San Marcos has accepted the basketball coach position for 1961 62. He is married with a nine month old daughter and will complete a B S degree from Southwest Texas State College this month P E major and math minor. He served four years in the Air Force as a water plant operator and has coaching and officiating experience including little league umpiring and church basketball. The Waldmans are active Meth odist Church members and will join the Shiner community with a positive outlook.
The St Ludmila Academy PTA hosts a September 11 meeting at 8:00 p.m. in the Parish Gym with Rev Father John Hanacek as speaker. KJT KJZT and D Os hold a September 10 1:30 p.m. session. KJZT members bring lunch. Catholic Altar Society meets September 12 at 3:00 p.m. in the Parish Gym. SHINER Farm Bureau meets September 12 at 8:00 p.m. at Legion Park with a social after. The Confraternity of Christian Mothers gathers September 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Catholic Gym. Mass and Communion urged September 15. Bunjes H D Club meets September 7 at 2:00 p.m. at Mrs Ed Nollkamper home.
Lavaca County cotton farmers can reduce their 1962 boll weevil problem by destroying stalks as early as possible. County Agent John V. Lindsey urges checking equipment now and completing harvest quickly to prevent a heavy winter carryover of boll weevils.
The Hallettsville Livestock Commission reported 1440 cattle 325 hogs and 130 sheep on hand with prices for calves cows hogs and sheep across categories. Funeral services were held for Edgar Zimmermann at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner with Rev Edwin J Oehlke officiating. The 51 year old farmer died in a Saturday night hit and run on the Gonzales highway after shopping at Pulkra bek Store. He is survived by siblings and was interred in Shiner City Cemetery.

The annual Harvest Festival at Moulton VFW Hall sponsored by St. Joseph's Catholic Parish will be held Sunday September 10. A family style dinner and supper will be served with games and amusements throughout the day and night. The evening auction begins at 3 30 PM.
