Customs Officer Slain Near Brownsville on Duty

Customs Officer Fred Tate was shot and killed by an alleged Mexican smuggler two miles north of Brownsville while searching a wagon. This follows Ranger Joe Shaw's death on August 22, marking another fatal attack on border officers. Tate’s funeral was held in Flatonia with numerous mourners. he left a wife and three children.
