Adolph Richter Named for Old Timers Hall of Fame

Adolph Richter a Shiner Texas baseball promoter and civic leader is lauded for long service as player manager and organizer. He promoted baseball in the 1920s 1930s served as mayor for 18 years directed street paving gas water and fire services and helped found local parks and clubs.

Rifle Blast Fatal To Joe J Smolik

Hallettsville Lavaca County farmer Joe J Smolik 61 died from an accidental rifle discharge near the Oscar Koerth camp about 12 miles southeast of Hallettsville on Monday November 15 1971. The .32 20 rifle discharged while Smolik was unloading it from his pickup. Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart Church with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Stella a daughter Mary Ann and several siblings. He was a World War II veteran and member of the American Legion Knights of Columbus and Sacred Heart Church.

Siegel 69 died November 8 1971 in Shiner Hospital after two days as a patient Funeral services were held November 10 at the Shiner Catholic Church with a Requiem Mass Burial followed at Shiner Catholic Cemetery Pallbearers included nephews and relatives He was born September 27 1902 in Shiner Texas and survived by his wife Catherine two sisters and several brothers and nieces and nephews The family expresses sympathy to all in sorrow

Five Men Sentenced in Lavaca District Court

Five indicted men were tried in Lavaca County District Court. George Baros received 5 years from the Texas State Department of Corrections with probation afterward. Clarence Johnson got 2 years probation for breaking and entering a coin operated machine. Francis Wayne O Connor faced 5 years probation for burglary. David Lee Perez was fined 225 dollars plus 25 dollars court costs for aggravated assault. Joe Vasquez was fined 250 dollars plus 25 dollars costs for aggravated assault and jailed for inability to pay the fine.

Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service Planned in Shiner

The Interfaith Community Thanksgiving Service will be held November 24 at 7 30 p m in Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church. Eight local ministers will participate with Rev Travis Rider delivering The Source of Our Blessings. Choirs from all churches will join in singing Come Ye Thankful People Come and the Shiner Youth Choir will sing Thank You Jesus.

Shiner United Fund Seeks Rural Drive Support

A letter campaign in Shiner targets rural residents with 266 mailings. By November 18 contributions reached 2238 of a 2300 goal, and 52 workers, or 54 percent, have completed calls and returned envelopes.

John N. Orsak rites in Yoakum

John N. Orsak of Temple died in a Temple hospital at 3 00 p m Thursday November 18 1971 at age 60 2 1. Funeral services were held November 20 at 3 00 p m in St Joseph Catholic Church Yoakum with a Requiem Mass. Burial followed in St Joseph Cemetery. Rosary was recited November 19 at Buffington Funeral Home Chapel Yoakum. He was a retired US Army veteran born September 17 1911 in Yoakum DeWitt County Texas. Survivors include son David Lee Orsak two daughters Gene Knott and Lambert Laskowski all of Houston three sisters Louise Orsak Lillian Guettner and Jane Hurta. Additional notes list family members and infant losses.

Shiner Independent School District informs parents that state law requires immunization against six diseases for all students entering Texas schools.
