The office reported a call from Congressman Clark W. Thompson Tuesday afternoon. Thompson was covering his Ninth Congressional District in the interest of his constituents.
On December 14 1950 peanut growers will vote in a referendum on marketing quotas. Eligible voters include owners operators and sharecroppers with a peanut crop of 1950 grown on farms with more than one acre. If two thirds approve quotas will apply to 1951 1952 and 1953 crops unless the Secretary of Agriculture terminates due to demand or a national emergency. If more than one third oppose quotas will not be used for 1951 and a new referendum will be held next fall for the next three crops. Edgar Freytag Lavaca County PMA chairman explains.
Attendants at Youens Hospital in Weimar say Msgr. Anthony Drozd is “doing fine.” He was found unconscious at his desk and admitted earlier in the week. Doctors report his condition has improved and is no longer serious.
Deer hunters may start November 16 and hunt through December 31 with a two buck limit. Some areas report poor turkey season due to coons and foxes. A big game license costs 2.15 dollars, exemptions apply for youth or residents, and deer carcasses require proper tagging and evidence of kill.

Mike V. Janak was re elected to chair Lavaca County Farm Bureau for another year at the director's meeting in Wied Hall. R J Osborn was elected vice chairman and secretary Leon Mladenka was re elected. Commissioner Joe Kouba of Shiner named delegate to the State Farm Bureau Convention at Mineral Wells November 21 22 and 23. Kouba accepted and will represent Lavaca County at the convention, Mladenko reported in Hallettsville.
Prospect for extending Highway 200 from Eagle Lake to Chesterville, eight miles, was dim after the state highway commission virtually rejected the plan. The commission will consider development in the future when conditions permit. The Eagle Lake Chesterville link is vital to completing Highway 200 to Houston as an alternate San Antonio route and would shorten Gonzales residents’ travel to Houston.
Do not hunt at night with a headlight in deer territory. Modern deer cartridges have extreme power and can cause fatal injuries. Hunters are urged to prioritize safety as survival chances are low once hit.
Alfred E. Hornshu of Witting died November 19 in a Houston Veterans Hospital at age 55 5 14. He was born in Breslau June 5 1893 and lived in Lavaca County Texas most of his life. Funeral at Kabena Funeral Home Hallettsville November 22 with graveside at Shiner City Cemetery. He served in World War I and is survived by wife Meta Petrich and two daughters two sons and several siblings.
Ludmila's P.T.A. met November 6 at 3 45 p m with 32 members present. The second and third grades presented a program under Sister Genevieve. The group opened with prayer and voted to cover the S L A band bill for the first month and seek sponsors for future months. The annual country store is set for the first Saturday in December with committees named. Sister Frances to write Father Wagner a note of appreciation. A teachers needs bill was approved for payment. The Gazette notes an error in the Star Grocery advertisement where Bakers Unsweetened Chocolate 8 oz bars were listed as 29 cents but should be 39 cents. The notice apologizes for the proofreading mistake.
The Struka Station and Grocery will shut from 12 noon to 3 p.m. on November 30 for a closing notice.
Santa Claus will visit Shiner Friday December 8 at 6 p.m. More details in next issue.
The Thanksgiving holiday will close all business houses in Shiner on Thursday November 30. St Ludmila Academy will observe the city closing day. Shiner High School will observe November 23 and 24 for the State Teachers annual meeting and November 30 Thanksgiving. The school will makeup the Nov 30 holiday at a future date to preserve attendance records.
Gloria Ann Sommerlatte the Shiner F F A Sweetheart represented her chapter at a banquet in Yoakum honoring district sweethearts from seven schools. Norma Caraway of Nixon was chosen district Sweetheart. about 90 members attended presided by Billy Glass with Harlan Johnson as master of ceremonies.
The 4 H Club of St Ludmila's Academy announces a cake sale for Saturday November 25 from 11 a m to 4 p m at Shiner Motor Sales.
The S L A Midgets defeated the St Rose Mustangs 45 to 0 at Zander Field on Monday. Machacek scored three touchdowns and led a dominant ground attack as Fric and Brogger added others, while the defense shut out the Mustangs.
The Plunkett Show comes to Shi ner for three evenings November 27 28 and 29 at Legion Park. Citizens welcome the entertainment featuring trained seals and dogs acrobats and a three act musical comedy each night.
The Methodist Sunday School will present its annual Thanksgiving service Sunday night at 7 o clock. Praise songs and special musical numbers will be rendered by the Cradle Rollers Beginners Primary Junior and Intermediate Classes. All parents and the public are urged to attend.
News from Youngston Ohio reports the death of Mrs Mary Klos Trampush aged 50. She leaves three daughters one son and her husband. Survivors include four sisters and two brothers and parents Joe and Theresa Klos. Funeral was held Friday November 17 with Bill Klos of Wilson in attendance.
The Firemen's Wives Auxiliary will hold its regular meeting at City Hall on Tuesday November 28 at 7 30 p.m. Members are urged to attend.
Mr and Mrs Rudy Garbade returned from a wedding trip to Texas. The ceremony uniting Miss Leona Michaelis and Rudy Garbade was read at Holy Cross Lutheran Church Yoakum on November 9. The couple departed quietly for their honeymoon trip.
Joseph Mikulik, a Shiner resident since immigrating from Czechoslovakia in 1898, died at his home November 14 at age 71. Funeral services were held November 16 at Roeder Funeral Home with burial in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. he was a retired blacksmith and active lodge member. He is survived by his wife Terezie, two sons J L Mikulik and Edwin Mikulik, one daughter Alonie died in infancy, four brothers, and one sister in Czechoslovakia.
The Business Men's Club will meet tonight at 7 o'clock at Pus tejovsky Cafe. Those unable to attend must notify the Gazette office by 3 o'clock today or plates will be prepared and collected for Turkey with all trimmings.
Mary Ann Woolfolk was chosen to represent St. Ludmi la's Academy as Duchess of the Academy at Hallettsville P T A Fete. She named Eugene Caka as her Duke and the event crowned Festival Queen III. Participating schools included St. Louis High School Castorville Blessed Sacrament and several San Antonio Victoria and Schulenburg academies.
A turkey shoot and entertaining games are planned at Green School on Sunday November 26 starting at 1 p.m. Soft drinks will be provided and families are urged to attend.
