The local Chamber of Commerce designates Armistice Day as a closing holiday for all business houses next Monday November 11th. No public celebration planned in Shin er though a benefit performance tonight by the Little Theatre for the American Legion seeks patronage.
The annual Red Cross drive begins next Monday on Armistice Day. Mrs Elo Wolters reports the member list is now open at Farmers State Bank for signatures. The Gazette donates its circulation this week to fund the Red Cross supplement and readers are urged to leave contributions at the bank.
Armistice day honors those who died in World War I and questions the earliest American casualty. The Gazette features an illustrated piece by Elmo Scott Watson exploring disputes over the first martyr and other debated points in Armistice Day Memories.
Golden Gate Orchestra will play old time waltz and two step at Legion Hall next Monday night November 11th. Everyone is invited to celebrate Armistice night. Admission is 50 cents.
Kolar Stanek Post No. 201 tops the drive for 1980 members with 83 signed in October 22. The one day push in Shiner set a statewide pace, nearly matching 1929, and the adjutant expects full quota soon.
Edmund Havelka recalls a spring time road trip from Peach Creek to Seguin and San Antonio. He tours landmarks including the Medical Arts Building and the Alamo, visits Incarnate Word College and Brackenridge Park, notes missions and the St Francis Home, and urges Shiner readers to support the St. Ludmila academy area charity.

A large audience gathered at the High School auditorium Friday for the annual Hallowe'en program. Director Mrs. S A Thulemeyer presented Mother Goose Isle with leading roles played by Aline Zappe and Elizabeth Pfenninger. The PTA provided refreshments. receipts totaled about 41 dollars.

Austin Oct 30 J J Olson of Yoakum Lavaca County state representative said he would seek the state nomination for state commissioner of agriculture next year. Olsen is finishing his second term and will announce formally later. Geo B Terrell the present commissioner has said he would not seek reelection.
Smiley October 30 bank robbery netted between 5000 and 7000 dollars. Robbers gained access through a rear window and bored a vault, failed to open the safe, and towed it away on a truck. About 300 dollars in stamps were also stolen. Sheriff B Neighbors of Genzles reported the incident. Bank president O H Culpepper noted burglary insurance.
The Southern Pacific suffered several wrecks this week, the worst at Winchester where a long freight derailed near the depot on Sunday morning. The car beside the engine left the rails, crowding thirteen freight cars of merchandise including automobiles tobacco and toys. Gasoline spilled into ditches and required care to prevent ignition. Two wrecking crews labored until Tuesday morning, causing extensive track and equipment damage with six cars completely demolished.
In Weimar and Schulenburg a traveling vendor claimed to represent Peacock Hosiery Mills of Dallas and took hosiery orders promising October delivery. After not delivering, investigations found no such Dallas mill. The seller took one fourth of payments. authorities cannot locate him. One buyer paid five dollars.
The Shiner Chamber of Commerce holds its regular monthly meeting tonight, November 7, with a call for full attendance. President Frank Rubin urges members to attend.
The P T A will hold its regular meeting next Thursday November 14 at 3 o'clock in the high school building. All members are urged to attend.
