LOCI OG TM notes tell of Q B Schaefer praising a Shiner roof sign as he flies from Dallas to land at his 3,000 ft Herder farm strip. The 10 ft lettering, near Shiner four miles west north west, sits by a well kept airfield with a sock and marked tires.
The Post Office in Shiner Texas will close all day Saturday Memorial Day May 30. General Delivery window will operate from 11 to 12 noon for general delivery mail. No Rural Delivery service will be provided.
The Rev and Mrs John C Gilbert left Tuesday for San Antonio for the Southwest Texas Conference annual session. The church board asked for Rev Gilbert to be returned to the Shiner charge. His parents will care for the two children during their absence.
The City Recreation Hall in Hall ettsville will stay open every night except Monday from 6:00 PM to provide ice cold refreshments and dancing. Bring your parties to spend evenings with us.
Bishop Stephen A. Leven Auxiliary of San Antonio spoke at St. Ludmila's Academy graduation exercises. Rev. Father John Hanacek presented diplomas. final Benediction by Rev. Father Hanacek. Margaret Craft valedictorian. Elizabeth Elekar salutatorian. Scholarships awarded to Margaret to Our Lady of the Lake College Elizabeth to Incarnate Word College. Joseph Pustka to St Edward's University. Essay prizes honored Irene Pustka Emily Ann Chrastecky Allyne Gillar for "One Nation Under God." Senior class thanks supporters.
St. Ludmila's Academy held its eighth grade commencement on Friday May 22 at 8:00 pm Mass in Shiner Catholic Church. Father John Hanacek gave the sermon and presented diplomas to 27 graduates. Valedictorian Charlene Ann Kramerbauer 97.6 and salutatorian Rose Marie Miculka 96.6 led honors with Jean Marie Harabis as honor student 96.5.
The Houston Post on Friday May 22 featured ten University of Houston students chosen by college deans for honors. Barbara Ruth Henkhaus of Shiner High School was the only out of city recipient, noted as 20 and president of Panhellenic representing Delta Zeta.
Shiner Farm Bureau holds its monthly meeting on Wednesday June 3 at 8:00 p.m. at Legion Park. Catholic Daughters plan a June 1 meeting at 8:00 p.m. in the Parish Gym to discuss a summer money making project and celebrate year end. The Catholic Daughters officers will be installed in Yorktown on Friday June 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Holy Cross Auditorium with all Court St. Paul officers requested to attend. Knights of Columbus will receive Holy Communion in a body at the 6:30 Mass on Sunday June 7. all members urged to participate.
Shiner High School held its baccalaureate in the gym at 7 00 p m with Rev Father Michael O Shaughnessy as speaker urging good citizenship and voting rights He compared life to baseball emphasising teamwork and democracy In his closing he urged a Christian life Sandra Ward presided and local ministers gave invocations scripture and benediction
The Methodist Vacation Church School begins Monday morning June 1 at 8 30 with five sessions daily until 11 00 for children 12 and under. Nursery and kindergarten study God and His World primary Earth is Full of His Riches juniors Praise Ye the Lord.
The Shiner Chamber of Commerce awards 300 to Maxie Kloesel at graduation May 22 for outstanding FFA senior. Elton Zander presents the prize, aimed at boosting agricultural projects and education for members with strong projects and clean conduct.
On Thursday evening May 21 the eighth grade graduation took place at 7 30 p m in the High School gym. Sandra Ward played the processional and recessional while Annabel Seifert gave the Salutatory Andrea Klekar the Valedictory. Principal Barton O Neal introduced Don Kaspar who urged graduates to decide for themselves accept responsibility and prepare for future careers He stressed service to others and the role of religion. Diplomas were presented by Norman Davis and Chas Chovanetz with closing remarks by Davis and a benediction by Ray Seale.
The annual Catechetical Vacation School begins Monday June 1 at Shiner Catholic Parish and runs through Friday June 12. Morning pick ups are at 7 30 a m at listed local spots and dismissal is 3 00 p m.
The Shiner Public School term wrapped with a May 22 outdoor commencement on Comanche Field under light rain worries. Principal Max Seidenberger announced awards, scholarships and diplomas as Arlen Ray Zander and Jonnie Bee Bednar led in math and oratory honors.
Yoakum's 30th annual Tom Tom Boosters will arrive in Shiner from Hallettsville about 4:15 p.m. Friday June 5. Shiner residents are invited to greet the group and enjoy the planned entertainment.
Kaspar Wire Works will close its plant all of next week for annual vacation leave. The shutdown affects the entire facility and idles all workers during the period.
Director D. T. Harkrider of the Texas Highway Department urges owners with farm truck licensing to check for possible violations of the Texas Motor Vehicle Law. An investigation into widespread abuse of a lower license rate provision for farm trucks is planned.
Arlen Ray Zander son of Mr and Mrs Elton Zander led a perfect attendance twelve year record and was valedictorian with a 95 416 average among thirty six classmates He earned two scholarships to state supported colleges and Texas Council related colleges and four awards in science social studies mathematics and attendance He played football baseball and basketball earning varsity letters and held leadership roles in National Honor Society FFA and school bands He plans to attend State University this fall.
Mrs. Jane Valicek 75 of 122 Dalling Ct San Antonio died May 24 at home. Survived by brothers Anton Hodanek Shiner Joe Hodanek Seymour and many nieces and nephews. Services 3 00 p m Wednesday at Southside Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Dr Bertha Graebner. Interment Mission Burial Park San Antonio.
Joe F. Roznovsky, age 84 years 5 months 27 days, died May 25, 1959 at Wagner Hospital. Funeral from Buffington Funeral Home Shiner May 28 at 8:30 a.m. to Shiner Catholic Church for a Requiem Mass at 9:00 a.m. Burial in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Full obituary to appear in next week's Gazette.

Funeral services for Mrs Paul Baumann 73 were held at St Paul Lutheran Church Nordheim. She died May 15 1959 at Laster Nursing Home Yorktown after strokes. Born Anna Podsim Sept 7 1885 in Leipsig Germany she and family settled near Shiner Texas. Survivors include sisters Mary Neumann Ella Marburger and brother Walter Podsim.
