The Shiner Gazette asks news contributors to submit reports a day early for timely publication. End of week activities should arrive Monday and mid week events on Fridays to ensure inclusion.
A list of May meetings and notices across Shiner and nearby communities includes Confraternity of Christian Doctrine executive board at the Catholic Parish Gym with Archdiocesan moderator Father Till, ordinations for Joseph Hubner and Lawrence Matula, and numerous church and civic events at Brethren Church Cemetery Legion Hall and VFW Home. Also announced are Knights of Columbus, Shiner Lodge AF and AM, Hermann Sons, St Elizabeths Society, and Catholic Nurses District II gatherings with guest speakers and service observations.
The Shiner High School auditorium hosts the third annual recital featuring costumed dancers and soloist Miss Jenny Williford in blue and silver. Pupils Carla Beth Kubicek Laurilyn Watzlavick Gina Wagner Diana Yates plus second and third year students perform along with ballroom dancers Judy Mraz Gregory Wagner and others. The public is invited for Thursday May 17 at 8 00 p.m. Admission 35 cents adults 25 cents children.
County farmers are urged to attend a May 10 1962 meeting at 8 00 P M in the American Legion Hall Shiner. Extension Entomologist Connie Garner of A M College will assist with cotton insect control problems. The meeting emphasizes collective action to improve pest management results.
Mrs. Jos K Darilek 83 formerly of Rt 3 Shiner died at Crews Hospital Gonzales after a nine day illness. Born Milada Zalman she moved to America from Czechoslovakia in 1880s. Survived by two sons and four daughters with 24 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Funeral at St Josephs Catholic Church with Rev Emil Vinklarek officiating. Interment in Moulton Catholic Cemetery.
A San Antonio firm won a 3.5 mile U S 77 and U S 77 A project in Lavaca County for 164 230 dollars with grading foundations and asphalt to Lavaca River to U S 90 A. M G Cornelius Yoakum district engineer and H P Krause Yoakum resident engineer will oversee the 100 working day job.
The Ladies Aid sponsors the annual Spring Church Social at United Dr Martin Luther Church on Thursday May 10 starting at 7:00 p.m. The event offers a convivial fellowship hour with a varied menu of foods and no admission charge, though a free will offering is appreciated. Friends and members are invited to attend and enjoy the evening.
Mrs. Raymond Dierksen presents a book review of Land of Eldorado by Santo Uberto Barbieri on Wednesday afternoon May 16 at 3 00 p.m. in the Lutheran Social Hall Shiner. The talk is the chief study book for Women of the Church on South American foreign themes and the public is invited.
Shiner parishioners meet with Father Hanacek to plan a full day at Legion Park on May 27. Father Matula will celebrate his first Mass at SS Cyril and Methodius Church followed by Mass at the parish church. Activities include Mass, a noon dinner, 10:30 a.m. Mass, 5:00 p.m. supper, ground concessions, and a party- style dance at Legion Park.
Yoakum U S Army Reserve Unit Company E reopens six month enlistment for young men. Schedule had been closed due to over strength and now offers reserve training. Weekly Tuesday meetings at the new Reserve Training Center on Yoakum Street south of the Shiner underpass.
Curious guests swarm Shiner High School as a play titled Ghoul Friend features a mad scientist and Marina with memory loss. The senior class presents the suspenseful comedy Sunday May 13 at 7 30 p m in the high school gym with admission 35 cents for students and 50 cents for adults.

S S Cyril and Methodius parish will run its annual catechetical summer school from May 28 to June 8. Transportation will be provided from Dilworth Church Green's School Midway Bodeker and Siegel Stores.
In a Democratic runoff likely June 2, John Connally leads with 391 957 votes to Ralph Yarborough's 289 085. Lavaca County shows Connally ahead with 1114 votes while Yarborough trails. Thompson wins U S House district nine without a runoff. Statewide, voters approve eliminating the poll tax and oppose horse racing and pari mutuel betting.
Lavaca County Farm Bureau sponsors Kathy Matus to attend the Oklahoma Citizenship Seminar at Oklahoma Christian College in July. From three finalists, Kathy Matus was chosen for character, scholarship, leadership, and public speaking.
The Texas Election Bureau reports updated results from Monday covering 253 of 254 counties with 169 counties complete. Officials tally totals for statewide races and key propositions as data streams in.
Lavaca County held a single Republican ballot box in Shiner on May 5 with 28 votes cast. Governor candidate Jack Cox led with 24 votes to Ray Whittenberg's 2, and other races showed multiple 26 vote tallies for several statewide offices. Parr ump bail and park questions produced mixed results.

A Social Security Office representative from Victoria Texas will meet residents at Shiner City Hall at 9 AM Monday May 14 1962. File claims for retirement survivor or disability benefits and get help with the program. Persons disabled for at least five years of the ten-year period ending under disability may qualify and spouses and dependent children may also receive checks. Claims filed by June 30 1962 may be retroactive to disability start date. those filed later may be valid only 18 months prior to filing.
