Senior Class Play Proves Big Hit at St. Ludmila’s

The St. Ludmila’s Academy senior class play Let Me Out Of Here proved a big hit with two nightly performances. The farce featured Albina Spann as Eva Boyd and Mary Ann Pekar as Angela Boyd, with Willie Kutac and Pat Wagner delivering strong comic turns. The S.L.A. Band provided lively numbers and the seniors closed with Eastertide tributes and the class song.

Mrs. Mary Jiral Laid to Rest in Shiner Funeral

Funeral rites for Mrs. Mary Jiral age 77 were held May 2 at Shiner Catholic Church after a brief illness. The service included a Solemn Requiem Mass, with Czech sermon, and Rosary at Roeder Funeral Home. Surviving relatives include four stepdaughters and five stepsons, 38 grandchildren, and 32 great grandchildren. she had lived in Shiner since 1927.

Marjorie Brod Wins Science Honor Award

Clem A Blessington of Shiner High School announces Marjorie Brod as this year’s recipient of the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award Medal for top scholastic science records. Winners may compete for three $3,200 scholarships at the University of Rochester. medal awarded at graduation. Award honors scholastic achievement with leadership and activities also considered.

Chili Supper At Shiner High Gym Set For May 7

The Arrow staff sponsors a chili supper in the Shiner High School gym on May 7 from 6 to 8 p m. Guests enjoy unlimited chili a slice of pie and tea. A stunt show follows. Tickets cost 75 cents for adults and 50 cents for children under 12.

Honor Students at Shiner High Class of 1953

Shiner High announces its top graduates for the 1953 class. Valedictorian Laverne Pfeil and salutatorian Doris Henkhaus head a tight four year average race with Pfeil at 94.400, Henkhaus 94.014, Marjorie Brod 93.970, and Jean Mueller 93.644. The highest among the boys was Ivan Pfeil, trailed by Roland Weber and Kenneth Otto.

FHA Students Win State Degrees

The F H A State meeting in San Antonio April 30 and May 12 saw 191 Shiner area girls receive state degrees. Miss Nila Mae Maner led, with Earline Vrana Marjorie Brod Doris Henkhaus and Ida Louise Schierschwitz Barbara Turek among delegates. Speakers included Judge Sarah T Hughs Dr Bernell Moore and John McFarland. The Shiner chapter produced the first three girls ever to receive state degrees.

Weather vane on Shiner water tower fixed at last

A Shiner citizen complained to Mayor Paul R Otto about the town weather vane, jokingly urging him to climb the water tower. The vane is now repaired, and residents can once again tell which way the wind is blowing.

Ancient Money Display At First National Bank

An exhibit of 15 frames about 22 inches square will be shown at The First National Bank in Shiner on May 12 13 and 14. The display features paper money from early Colonial days and from the founding era.

Bertha Eggert, 85, died May 3 in a local hospital after two weeks illness. Funeral at United Dr. Martin Luther Church at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Edwin Oehlke officiating. Burial in Shiner City Cemetery. Survived by two daughters, a son, five grandchildren, one great grandchild, and several siblings.

Citizens Committee of Shiner Forms and Elects Chairman

The Citizens Committee of Shiner met in the High School Study Hall with eighty one members present to discuss the local school study. Richard M. Cummins of the Texas Education Agency explained the committee’s workings while Supt. Fox praised representation and Dr. John V. Connolly was chosen chairman.

Lodges Reach For Church Repair Fund Boost

The Kit T 44 225 Lodges of Shiner held a Sunday Game party at Legion Park with gross receipts of 766 33. After expenses, 615 21 was added to the Church Repair Fund and gifts were received by Edwin Walleck Anna Jaluska Gilbert Janecek and Mrs Charles Patek.

Special Meeting Planned by VFW Post 6209 and Auxiliary

The VFW Post 6209 and Auxiliary announce a special meeting for Thursday night May 7 at 8 00 p.m. Urgent convention matters will be discussed and members are urged to attend. Subcommittees will study problems from six major approaches and detailed findings will appear in the next issue. The next general meeting is set for Monday night May 11 at 8 00 p.m.
