Funeral services for George McMaster 88 of 710 Josephine Street Yoakum were held in Yoakum March 30 at Buffington Chapel with the Rev W L Loessin officiating. Graveside services followed at 3 00 p m at Confederate Cemetery Alvin. He died at 3 00 a m March 28 1960 in Jackson Mississippi at his sister Sallie Thornton’s home where he had resided for about a year.

Evelyn Marie Stratman daughter of Mr and Mrs E W Stratman of Shiner won the best actress award for her role as Le Bossu in The Infanta in a Marion area competition. The first place play advances to a regional event in San Marcos in April. Stratman is a senior at Shiner High School and holds roles as Drum Major Honor Society member and church musician.

The high school gym hosted the Thursday one act play Infanta an Oscar Wilde adaptation. Marion area judges awarded first place the cast featured Mildred Welhausen Irene Claire Buske Sandra Ward Carl Jaks Evelyn Marie Stratman and director Max Seidenberger praised for casting and staging. The Infanta Maria dies of a broken heart after a royal intrigue ending with a compassionate kiss of devotion.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ray Humphreys 69 of Beaumont were held in Yoakum March 18. The Rev R B Lear officiated at Buffington Chapel and Oak Grove Cemetery. She died in Beaumont March 16 and is survived by husband Marvin Ray Humphreys a brother William Balhorn and a sister Bertha Turbev ille.

A Hallettsville jury commission named on March 14 by Judge Lester Holt selected the spring term grand jury on March 17. The grand jury will be impanelled April 4 with members Mrs Lucille Geraldes Route 4 Hallettsville Jack Guthrie Route 3 Hallettsville and Paul R Otto of Shiner. Judge W W Ellison of Gonzales will charge the grand jury in Hallettsville on April 4 and stay until investigations end.

Judge Holt Dies After Stroke Funeral Rites Held in Hallettsville
Judge Lester Holt longtime 25th Judicial District of Texas died at Nix Hospital San Antonio Sunday March 27 1960 after strokes suffered March 19 and 23. Funeral services were held at St James Episcopal Hallettsville with burial in Weimar. He served since 1923 and was 83.

Anton F. Psencik of Smithville died Friday morning March 25 at age 86. Rites were held Monday at 9:30 at the Catholic Church in Kovar with Rev. Father Clyde Holtman officiating. Burial followed in the church Cemetery under Marrs Funeral Home direction. Rosary was recited at the chapel Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Survivors include his wife Sophie Kremel and five sons and four daughters all of Smithville, plus a brother and sister and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Attending from Shiner were Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Biehunke and children and Mr. and Mrs. Max Seidenberger.

Highway widening planned for 1961 62 in Lavaca County
March 23 the State Highway Commission approved the 1961 62 consolidated highway advance planning in Lavaca County. The project calls for widening grading structures and surfacing 3.5 miles of Highways 77 and 77 A from 138 feet west of the Lavaca River Bridge near Highway 90 A. It should be added to a construction program later this year after federal authorization.
