St Ludmila's Hosts Tri-Deanery Literary Finals
St Ludmila's Academy in Shiner hosted the Archdiocesan South East Deanery finals for Declamation and Arithmetic Grades Four through Eight on Sunday March 25 at the parish gym. Participants from Hallettsville Weimar El Campo Ganado Columbus and Shiner competed with winners named for each grade and division. St Ludmila's earns the trophy for most points among participating schools.

Funeral Rites for Louis W. Sciba in Cuero
Louis William Sciba Sr. 78 of Cuero died March 26 1962 after a stroke. Funeral March 28 at 9:15 from the funeral home and 9:30 Requiem Mass at St Michael’s Church Cuero burial in Hallettsville Catholic Cemetery. Survived by wife Cecilia two sons Louis W Jr Leon one daughter Ralph Doty and many relatives. He worked in Cuero Independent School District cafeteria since 1952 and previously ran a bakery.

Funeral services were held in Yoakum on Saturday March 17 1962 for John Paul Lauer Jr a lifelong Yoakum resident and local carpenter. Officiating was Rev Edward J Jansky at Buffington Chapel St Josephs Church and St Josephs Cemetery. Born Lavaca County June 29 1904 he died March 16 at Huth Memorial Hospital after a yearlong illness. Survivors include wife Hattie a daughter Mrs George Roznovsky a son Frank Lauer a brother Emil Lauer five sisters Emma Orsak Ben Janca Jim Miku lenka Mary Horky Rudolph Olsovsky. Also noted were attendees from Shiner and San Antonio later in report.

Schulenburg Shorthorns Win First Invitational Relays Crown
Schulenburg High School Shorthorns took first in their inaugural meet at Shorthorn Stadium on March 17, with Shiner second and Del Valle third. Competitors included Flatonia Burton Lexington Weimar and Smithville. Events covered sprint relays, distance runs, hurdles and field events with multiple podium finishes. The gathering also notes a separate birthday celebration for Edwin Schlabach in Shelby.

The Shiner Public School PTA hosts a two day Mop and Broom sale on April 6 and 7 to benefit the Light House for the Blind and local aid. A Texas blind crafts van will tour Shiner with PTA members distributing brooms maps and household items door to door. The sale funds support training and services for blind Texans. Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Riske visited Hallettsville to see their sick relative Miss Annie Timm at Renger Memorial Hospital.
