The Seniors perform A Southern Cinderella at City Auditorium on April 16. An earlier notice misspecified April 24, later corrected in St Ludmila’s Echoes, so please note April 16 as the correct date.
Mrs. Joe Janda died Wednesday morning at 4 15 in the local hospital after several weeks of illness. She was 35 years 4 months and 22 days old. Funeral services will be held Thursday March 26 at 10 a m from her mother Mrs. Joe Lahodny’s residence to the Catholic Church for a Requiem Mass. Burial will be at Shiner Catholic Cemetery. A Gazette write up will appear in the next issue.
Trustees elections set for Burjes School on April 4 from noon to 6 p m and Green School on April 4 with polls open 1 to 7 p m. Voters choose school trustees in two locations on the same day. Local residents are urged to participate in the public school governance process.

School census enumerators are busy this month listing children ages six to eighteen who will be eligible on September 1. If an enumerator cannot contact you, reach out promptly. Missing any child costs about 22.50 dollars in school funding for the district.
Oak Grove School schedules a two night local talent performance titled When a Woman Decides on March 28 and 29. Cast includes Erwin Fojt Anita Fojt Clarence Heinrich Mary Ann Nagelmueller Anita Haas Sophie Derrich W H Burt and Allyne Anderle.
A. G. Lichey, longtime Shiner resident and former mayor, died Friday at 4:40 am at his home after several months of illness. Funeral services were held Saturday at 4:00 pm from his son Oscar Lichey’s house with Rev. R. Schuetze. burial in City Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, three sons Oscar, Adolf, Edwin. three daughters Elise Rogge, Hilda Messer, Cora Vincik. seven grandchildren. three brothers and three sisters. numerous relatives. He served as mayor, justice of the peace for 18 years, and worked with Magnolia Petroleum and Herman Son Lodge. The community extends sympathy to the family.
In the Gazette issue of March 12 a photo shows A. E. F. Doughboys landing in Ireland. The soldier holding a little girl’s hand is Johnnie Hajek of Kokernot, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hajek. The letter notes a warm Irish welcome to American troops and praises local boys for their service while noting wartime publicity limits.

The Red Cross reports renewed sewing and knitting work is in progress for faithful volunteers while rumors about soldiers not receiving sweaters or overstocked clothing are debunked. Investigations show one sweater per soldier, weather shifts or climate transfers affecting gear, and national headquarters directing shipments. Rumors about neighboring counties not knitting are denied as propaganda and traced to misinformation.
In a lively four girl contest at Shiner High School Lola Mae Marburger was elected Sweetheart of the Baseball Team for 1942. Eunice Meyer was the previous year’s winner and Lola Mae will be crowned Queen Renihs II at the Gonzales game this week. Emily Kubecka Evelyn Havel and Madlyn Jo Hajek followed Lola Mae in votes.
Chicago dispatch reports a temporary sugar market halt as of April 28 for a nationwide rationing setup. Industrial users will register April 27 28. individuals May 4 7. Officials note possible regional supply issues but expect distribution adjustments by end of April.
Men aged 45 to 65 must register on April 27. They will not face compulsory military service but may be drafted to man the war industries. A separate group of 18 and 19 year olds will register later.
The Shiner Independent School District board orders an April 4, 1942 election at the new City Hall to elect two trustees. F R Mergenthaler is appointed to conduct the election per law. Paul R Otto, president, and H G Hollmann, secretary, certify.
In Lavaca County districts a school trustee election will occur on Saturday April 4 with one trustee elected in each district except the consolidated district. Three county trustees will be chosen. Chas McElroy and L A Bishop seek re election. Alois Markovsky declines. Herman L Wendt and George Kallus file to run. Rural districts vote for county trustee at large.
Most residents of voting precinct No 21 Gonzales County pledged defense bonds. Those who have not pledged should contact F M Baros at Kokernot to make their pledge. All residents of the precinct are urged to act at once.
Saturday night a Deca burglarized the local high school, smashing about twenty windows and a trophy case, stealing five water bubbler fixtures and a goose neck faucet, ransacking desks, and disturbing chemistry papers. Clues include fingerprints and torn documents. investigations by City Marshal Canon, Sheriff’s deputies, and local officials seek culprits, with possible involvement of outsiders and questioned local riders.
