Evening School Reports on Tomato Damage and Farm Practices

Farmers at the Evening School discussed the limited damage to tomato crops from the recent cold snap and planned to present practical findings on saving time labor and money in planting. Mr Kingen noted good potato yields and expanding acreage with cantaloupes. Livestock updates included vaccinating 68 yearlings for black leg and a calf loss prompting herd-wide vaccination.

Large Crowds Greet Rubin on Opening Day

Crowds filled the Saturday opening of Frank Rubin Store in Shiner though not a sale. The doors were opened after nearly a year, with Mr and Mrs Rubin and a large staff greeting patrons and welcoming guests from San Antonio and other areas. The stock was fresh and complete, drawing former customers and noting good weather on the event.

The Shiner Independent School District schedules an April 4 1931 election at the old city hall to elect four school trustees. F R Mergenthaler named election manager. Candidates must file names ten days prior. Also on the first Tuesday in April 1931 a city election for mayor city secretary and three aldermen is set with polls 8 am to 6 pm at the old City Hall.
