Class spirit runs high as grades prepare for the intra school meet to take place Thursday, Friday, with events starting at 2 p.m. Thursday March 18. Literary events are Friday morning, and declamation and extemporaneous speaking occur in the gym Thursday night at 8. Admission is free.
Gus J Strauss, formerly assistant director of the railroad commission gas utilities division, was named chief of the division by unanimous vote. The division regulates gas and butane gas rates and safety laws in Texas, and Strauss hails from Shiner, his native town, where many friends celebrate his advancement.

The new meat red stamp rationing requires no declaration of meat on hand. In the first month every War Ration Book No 2 holder gets 16 points of meat per week. A public list of point values for about 150 varieties will be released during the week of March 22 and apply to all U S retailers. Pets will not receive meat and farmers using meat for home use keep their full point quotas but must retain red stamps. If farmers sell meat or want to slaughter beyond home use, they must obtain ration points and, from April 1, a permit from the County War Board to slaughter for other purposes.

Bring tire records for B or C book renewal and a registration card for supplemental mileage ration. Applications may be made about 30 days before expiration to Joseph Muras or John E Kasper. Coupon 4 in A book expires March 21.
Miss Ida Lieskovsky daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Lieskovsky was sworn in as apprentice seaman in the Women s Naval Reserve at the Naval Procurement office in Houston on February 22. She reports to active duty at Hunter College New York. She graduated Moravia high school in 1937 and taught at Moravia high school for five years before resigning to move to New York City.
Miss Mary Wehl expresses sincere thanks for kindness shown during a hospital stay. She thanks Dr Wagner, Dr Boyle, the nurses, those who sent cards and flowers, and visitors, noting the kindness will be remembered.
The Mayor of Shiner Lavaca County Texas announces an election on April 6 1943 to choose a mayor city secretary and three aldermen for two years. Polls open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the new city hall with F R Mergenthaler named presiding judge. Candidates must file ten days before the election.

The (Shiner Independent) School District Board orders an election on April 3 1943 at New City Hall Shiner for 2 School Trustees. F R Mergenthaler named as election administrator. Election conducted as required by law. Paul R Otto presiding, H G Hollmann secretary.
Mrs Florian F Klecka died Friday March 12 at Port Arthur Hospital after a major operation. The funeral was held Monday at 10 am with burial in the local Catholic Cemetery. She was 35 years 9 months and 8 days. Surviving are husband Florian, daughters Evelyn 16 Margie 13 Dorothy 10 and stepdaughter Barbara Lee 10.

Relatives of Tech Sergeant Norbert R. Tasler learned from the War Department that he is missing in action in North Africa and later notified he is a prisoner of war in Italy. Letters from 1943 and church officials confirm Tasler is wounded but safe, with camp address details to follow.
Pete Kahanek, long in the barber trade, has bought fixtures and rented the building next to the Post Office. He plans to be ready for work on Thursday March 18.
John Patek Jr died March 9 at 6 50 a m in Rusk. Funeral at Sts Cyril and Methodius Church with Requiem High Mass by Mons Netar dus, burial in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Casket bearers were nephews Charles Joseph Victor J Frankie Chas Jr Joe L and Laddie Patek. Survivors: parents five brothers Jim Charles Laddie Jerome and Joe.
Mrs J J Templer and daughter Peggy Ann are visiting in Houston to be at the bedside of their mother Mrs W Tabas who is reported ill and receiving care.

C M Bishop editor of the Giddings News died suddenly at his home at 10 15 am Monday He actively participated in Central Texas civic affairs was a deacon at the First Baptist church and frequented Austin Survivors include his widow a son Barry Lee Bishop of the Dallas News staff and a daughter Mrs John Partain of Washington D C Another daughter Mrs John Ransom Eunice Bishop was killed in an automobile accident near Wharton Funeral services were held at Giddings March 11.
San Antonio Texas March 10 The South Texas Press Association convention this year will be a one day session here Saturday April 17 The announcement was made by Joe T Cook of Mission chairman of the association s contest committee in advising the South Texas Chamber of Commerce that the annual newspaper contests will be held The Palacios Beacon won this trophy last year.
