Class spirit runs high as grades prepare for the intra school meet to take place Thursday, Friday, with events starting at 2 p.m. Thursday March 18. Literary events are Friday morning, and declamation and extemporaneous speaking occur in the gym Thursday night at 8. Admission is free.
Gus J Strauss Named Chief Of Texas Gas Division
Gus J Strauss, formerly assistant director of the railroad commission gas utilities division, was named chief of the division by unanimous vote. The division regulates gas and butane gas rates and safety laws in Texas, and Strauss hails from Shiner, his native town, where many friends celebrate his advancement.

Meat Ration Plan Lets Consumers Skip Declarations
The new meat red stamp rationing requires no declaration of meat on hand. In the first month every War Ration Book No 2 holder gets 16 points of meat per week. A public list of point values for about 150 varieties will be released during the week of March 22 and apply to all U S retailers. Pets will not receive meat and farmers using meat for home use keep their full point quotas but must retain red stamps. If farmers sell meat or want to slaughter beyond home use, they must obtain ration points and, from April 1, a permit from the County War Board to slaughter for other purposes.
