The scholastic census is being taken for children ages 6 to 18 on Sept 1 1942. Parents urged to register children who will attend school this fall for the first time to ensure they are counted, as some are overlooked.
Sergeant C. D. Monroe of Portland Oregon was promoted to Staff Sergeant last week. Carlos has served eleven months in the army and spent eight months in the northwest. Through the Gazette Mrs. Mary Fuller, visiting her brother in Salem Oregon, contacted Carlos and they shared a dinner and a hometown visit.
The United Dr Martin Luther Church lists services each Sunday in German and English with Sunday School at 10 30 a m and Divine Service at 11 30 a m English. Missionary Dr John C Finefrock from India will speak Tuesday March 17 at 8 30 p m and Women's Missionary Society meets Wednesday March 18 at 3 00 p m. The pastor cites Matthew 10 32 42 and urges Christians to publicly confess faith. Rev Richard Schuetze leads devotion.
Sunday School at 10 a.m. led by Thomas Hughs with September morning worship at 11. Sunday night services include Training Union at 7 p.m. directed by Mrs. R. B. Bees and preaching at 8 p.m. Midweek prayer meeting is Wednesday at 8:00. Pastor Rayford Harris welcomes all to the services.

Secretary Wickard urged 2,500,000 cotton farmers to plant the full national allotment of 27,400,000 acres, stressing medium and longer staple varieties to meet military needs. Esteemed townsman Hugo Liebhafsky marks 50 years as a tailor, 30 years living in Shiner, and his 64th birthday on March 6. He began training in the Old Country at fourteen, worked unpaid for three years, then immigrated to America via Galveston to Hallettsville and finally Shiner. He and Mrs. Liebhafsky raised a fine family and enjoy strong health as well wishes pour in.
The Shiner Comanches begin their 1942 baseball season in Shiner on March 24 against the Gonzales Apaches. They schedule a total of fifteen games, with eleven set for Shiner.
A Dickson Branch meeting of the Farmers League will be held at the school house on Thursday March 12. Members are urged to attend as discussions promise untold benefits to attendees.
Mayor Ad Richter orders an election on April 7 1942 at the new City Hall to elect two Aldermen for two years. Presiding judge F R Mergenthaler appointed. Polls open 8 am to 6 pm. Candidates must file names ten days before election. City Secretary J M Canon attests.
Charles Tichavsky of Gonzales aged 83 years, 7 months, 26 days, died Friday morning at his son Rudolph's home. Born in Germany, he came to the United States at 21, married Mary Matus, had two children, and after her death remarried twice more, producing several more children. Funeral was at St. James Catholic church in Gonzales with Requiem High Mass. interment Gonzales City Cemetery. Pallbearers: Frank and Edwin Tichavsky, Emil Kocurek, John Dornak Jr., Edwin Kurtz, Steve Hrnchek. Surviving: two daughters, four sons, a foster son, and two foster daughters. He was a farmer, former Shiner and Schulenburg resident, and a member of the Catholic Church and S P J S T lodge. Sympathy extended to the bereaved.

James W. Dufner of Hallettsville enlisted in the Regular Navy for a minority cruise on March 5. Stanislav H. Herman of Hallettsville enlisted in the Naval Reserve on February 27, says Chief Ray H. George, recruiter in charge, Naval Recruiting Station, Texas.
Mrs J P Bartak reports that Dr Bartak, then in Prague when war began, is now in a German prison camp with another War Saw missionary and over 200 other American civilians. First news since late November, duration of confinement unknown. Texan friends are grieved by the internment, though religious work may continue in the camp.

The Shiner High School Band will give a formal concert Sunday afternoon March 22 at 4 00 featuring marches overtures and popular numbers. The High School Choral Club will join the program. Admission is free and the public is invited.
Mr and Mrs Amos Pavlik and their children leave Shiner for La Grange where they will establish a permanent home as Mr Pavlik serves as State Secretary of the K I T Society which has opened an office there. W J Janecek also spends time in La Grange and returns home for weekends.
The Red Cross has a new shipment of sewing and 25 sweaters to knit. It urges those who feel it their duty to assist to telephone the knitting or sewing chairman and do their part. So far 150 garments have been made and sent to a relief depot, with 17 sweaters currently being knitted for soldiers sailors and civilians.
A parachute battalion performs at the Palace Theatre on Tuesday and Wednesday, offering a timely entertainment feature for local audiences.
Lavaca County residents may obtain Farm Security Administration loans to boost food production when private financing is unavailable. Loans cover cattle, pastures, feed, milk handling facilities, hog housing and fencing, poultry flock increases, and family gardens with seed and equipment. The Devotion of Forty Hours was held Sunday through Tuesday at the local Catholic Church with favorable weather and large parishioner attendance. Altars were decorated with gladioli and many burning tapers. Clergy included Rt. Rev. Mons. Netardus Father Bily and several Reverends from nearby towns.
Relatives notified of the arrival of Sally Ann in San Antonio on March 5. Born to Mr and Mrs Laddie Janecek, weight 8 pounds 3 ounces. This is their first baby.
Mr and Mrs Ernest Baker are parents to a baby girl born Saturday afternoon at Gonzales Hospital.
A fine baby girl arrived to brighten the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Pustka of La Grange on February 21. She was named Maxine Mary. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Alois Pustka of here. They now have a boy and a girl in the home.
Mr and Mrs Fritz Barre of Yoakum welcomed a daughter Carolyn Ann born March 4 the first grandchild of Mr and Mrs Hugo Liebhafsky. Mr and Mrs Anton Svetlik of Flatonia welcomed a son Dennis Joe weight 91 2 pounds born Saturday. Supt and Mrs Stanley Cernosek of Moulton welcomed a baby daughter 6 1 2 pounds born at the local hospital Monday.
Mr and Mrs Frank Luksovsky welcomed a baby girl named Marilyn born Sunday weighing 8 pounds at the local hospital. Otto Bleier and wife celebrate a son Otto Jr born Saturday making three children. Newton Renken and wife welcomed a daughter Ethelyn Jo born March 10. Ed J Hans and wife celebrate their first baby girl born March 11.
O. W. Davis of Rusk spent the weekend with Mrs. O. C. Henkhaus and was there to tend his mother’s bedside, staying through the weekend.
Miss Irene Filip of San Antonio arrived Friday to accept an office job at the Texas Tanning and Manufacturing Company in Yoakum. She has studied at Draughon’s Business College since July last year.
Funeral services for Sgt Robert E Lee of San Antonio were held Monday afternoon at 3 from Mrs M J Mikes north of town. He died Friday March 6 in San Antonio. The home service and grave were led by Rev R Schuetze with taps by A A Darilek Jr. and flag presentation by Thomas Hughs and Henry Lee. Pallbearers named. Lee, 26, served in Co T Ninth Infantry at Fort Sam Houston. He married Kamila Mikes a year ago. Surviving are his wife, parents, four brothers and five sisters.
Mr and Mrs Felix Hubner mourn the loss of their infant son Thomas born Saturday at 5 oclock who weighed 8 14 pounds. Mons L P Netardus led funeral services at the Catholic church Sunday at 10 oclock, with interment in the Catholic cemetery. Pallbearers were Philip Hybner Daniel Hybner Gene Slanina and Milton Janca. The couple's first child, survivors include the grandparents A J Hubner and W J Janecek families. Our heartfelt sympathy goes to the bereaved.
