Washington announces a change in sugar rations with a five pound allotment per person for an 11 week period ending March 16. Stamp No 11 for three pounds expires March 15. The switch to stamp No 12 aims to save manpower and reduce handling while keeping rationed supply.

The Lesson-Sermon subject Reality will be read in all Christ Scientist churches on Sunday March 28. The Golden Text promises that God has prepared things for those who love him and not seen or heard by man. A Proverbs reference encourages receiving words and keeping commandments to gain knowledge of God.

Relatives announce the death of John Patek Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. John Patek Sr. in Rusk at 6:50 a.m. Funeral services will be from the family residence in our city on Thursday, March 11 at 10 a.m. then to the Catholic Church for Requiem High Mass. A write-up will appear in the next issue.
Miss Christine Derrich wed Grant Athey at Sacred Heart Church in Houston on Tuesday evening. The bride, daughter of Peter Derrich and former Shiner girl, is a St Ludmila’s Academy graduate and bookkeeper at Weingarten Stores. Groom is a bookkeeper in an oil company office. The Gazette extends best wishes for a long life of wedded bliss.
Mr Matt Antrich and Miss Julia Pavlicek united in marriage at Shiner Catholic Church with Rev E J Bily officiating. Witnesses were Mr and Mrs John A Tesar as warm wishes came from many friends in the Gazette.
Quite a number of Lee County men reported Tuesday morning for military service. Among them were three sets of twins, John and Robert Knox of Giddings, Hm. John and Theo Kilian of Giddings, Walter Kilian, Chas Hy and Willie Koslan of Lincoln. The Knox twins are related to the J. B. Monroe family formerly of Shiner.
Hospital patients include Mrs Jim Vaclavik and baby Mary Wehl, Mrs Paul Discher, Shiner, Earnest Bowe of Moulton, and W B Wright of Gonzales. Dismissals include Mrs E H Pohler and baby, Mrs S A Smith, Mrs Felix Hajek, Miss Ethelyn Tasler, Mrs Hazel Johnson, Mrs Gus Krueger, and Mrs Edwin Hoerig with baby.
Mayor announces election to choose a mayor city secretary and three aldermen for two years. Held in new city hall with presiding judge F R Mergenthaler. Polls open 8 am to 6 pm. Nominating filings due ten days prior. City Secretary J M Canon attests.

Bring tire records for B or C book renewal and bring your registration card for a supplemental mileage ration application at motor vehicle. Apply about 30 days before expiration to Joseph Muras or John E Kasper.
The Navy Recruiting Station Victoria Texas announces a Navy Recruiter will visit Yoakum every Wednesday starting March 10 to interview applicants for WAVES and SPARS and to discuss enlistment for men aged 17 and 38 to 50. Recruiter-in-Charge T. M. Potts will coordinate at the Post Office.
The Board of Trustees of Shiner Independent School District orders a school trustee election to be held April 3 1943 at New City Hall Shiner. F R Mergenthaler is appointed election manager and the election will be conducted as provided by law. Paul R Otto president and H G Hollmann secretary attest.
Miss Ella Zacharias daughter of Mr and Mrs Fritz Zacharias Sr of Shiner married Tom Story of San Antonio in a March 7 ceremony at the bride’s home. Rev Richard Schuetze officiated the vows. The couple will reside in San Antonio where Story is employed at Ft Sam Houston. The Cedar family and attendees shared a luncheon after the ceremony.
Miss Marie Jo Henkkaus and Mrs Walter Bender spent the week end in Houston, staying at a local hotel and visiting area attractions during their brief visit.
Notice to Branch Society No 1 members of Hochheim Prairie Mutual Fire and Storm Insurance Association. The 51st annual general meeting set for March 13 1943 at 3 p.m. will occur in the building beside Temple Lumber in Shiner Texas. Agenda includes minutes, officer and committee reports, 1943 44 director elections, delegates to the 52nd convention in Yorktown in May 1948, and other business. Attendees urged by Geo Nollkauper president and Wm Hagendorf secretary.
Gov. Coke Stevenson of Texas proclaims March as WAAC Recruiting Month in Texas as part of a regional action with Arkansas Oklahoma New Mexico and Louisiana. The proclamation calls for civilian cooperation and whole hearted support to boost WAAC enrollments across the Eighth Service Command.
The Shiner PTA and Band Sponsors club will meet Thursday at 4:45 in the gymnasium. The Rhythm Band will entertain the PTA, and all members are cordially invited.
Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy star in a spooky show with Dante the magician at the Palace Theatre on Tuesday and Wednesday. The pairing promises lighthearted thrills and classic screen comedy in a haunted themed program.
The Shiner Red Cross Chapter calls for more volunteers as 150 million bandages and dressings have been prepared for fronts worldwide. A large shipment is on hand and the war department requests faster completion amid mounting offensives. Volunteers are invited to help Monday to Friday 2:30 to 6 PM and Thursday 7:30 to 10 PM, wearing a wash dress, head covering, and no nail polish or jewelry.

Government appeals for millions of surgical dressings by April 1 as Shiner seeks volunteers. Workers will provide a few hours weekly. materials are ready. Community women urged to help in this wartime effort.
A blaze at Mitchell Ward school in Victoria, the city’s largest with 400 students, caused extensive damage on March 9. The ground floor fire spread to the three story building, with losses estimated around 140000 dollars. Fire crews from Foster and Aloe airfields helped after the student body had left. The brick shell remained as flames were brought under control amid a strong east wind.
Attendees from Shiner Moulton and nearby towns gathered for the funeral of Mrs Rosie H urta Lukas aged 76. Rev Barton of Nelsonville officiated as she was laid to rest beside her husband after passing on Wednesday March 3. The Gazette extends sympathy to the bereaved survivors.
The W M S meeting of the Lutheran Women’s Society is set for Wednesday afternoon March 17 at 3 p.m. The study topic will be The Lutheran Church in South America.
Miss Eunice Meyer of Houston spent the week end here. Miss Dorothy Muras of Houston spent the week end with home folks. Dr. F. M. Wagner is able to be up again after a spell of illness. This is very good news to his many friends and patients. Mr. and Mrs. Gus J. Strauss and children and Henry Strauss Jr. of Austin visited in our city Saturday. Dr. J. P. Bartak is in Delaware Ohio this week, attending a conference on Bases for World Order at Ohio Wesleyan University.
Mr and Mrs Adolph Darilek were told Sunday afternoon their son Sgt Leonard Darilek on a San Angelo to Harlingen flight was missing but later reports said he was found safe and sound.
Mrs. Eli Wolters chairman of Home Service Red Cross notified that Alexander Petruzela is a prisoner of war of the Japanese government. Petruzela is the son of Mr and Mrs Alexander Petruzela of the Sunset community.
Tuesday morning a chick house belonging to Emil Balusek Jr. caught fire. His father, the auxiliary Fire Chief, extinguished the blaze without filing a fire alarm. Junior avoided a larger loss by acting quickly, though many chicks were roasted.
On Friday March 5 the senior class hosted a gymnasium dance for the juniors with games and dancing as the main attraction. A lunch of sandwiches cookies and soda was served by senior home room mothers Mrs Siems Mrs Sonntag and Mrs Schmidt.
The family of the late H J Strauss thanks Shiner friends for sympathy through deeds of kindness and floral offerings at his passing. May God bless you.

Mr and Mrs J M Canon received a Sunday letter from E M Shelton vice president of the Marsman company stating a cable from Manila said their employees in the Philippines including R H Canon were safe. The cable was sent February 26 through the Red Cross.
The secretary of agriculture recorded an order on Monday canceling unsliced bread due to greater disadvantages and hardships. The ruling implies households will not need to slice bread in advance, saving time in the morning for homemakers.
One of baseball's greatest third basemen James J Collins died last Saturday at 73. He was the first to play away from the bag and to master defense against bunts. He held a lifetime batting average of .296 and fielding average of .929.
