Congressman Thompson urges targeted farm labor exemptions to keep essential agriculture running during wartime. He warns blanket deferments risk inflation and defense production, noting Mexico will help source seasonal harvest workers while preserving skilled rural manpower.
Shiner Chapter No 272 O E S will hold a meeting Tuesday March 13 at 8 p m Memorial services are planned during the session.
The Shiner F F A Stock Show on March 3 judged by Lavaca County Agent Jack Lindsey featured an 800 pound Hereford steer owned by Oren Remmers as top calf. Henry Neumann won first in sheep and capon with Benedict Mikes taking thirds in both categories. Carlton Hoerig led the top hog at 265 pounds with John Schroeder and Oren Remmers placing second and third. Prizes ranged from 2 to 50 dollars with multiple exhibitors earning small awards. The event drew good attendance despite poor weather, with thanks extended to the Chamber of Commerce, the Moulton F F A Chapter, and Mr. Lindsey.
Ed Dahse of Shiner Rt. 2 in the Dreyer community was chosen as outstanding conservation farmer of the Middle Guadalupe Basin soil conservation district by district supervisors in Yoakum. The Lavaca and DeWitt county winners Henry Ehlers of Charlottenburg and R Chumchal of Mount Olive are nearby well known farmers.
The public is reminded of a band concert to be held Thursday March 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the gymnasium. A 30 minute intermission will feature surprising adult numbers and a free will offering will be collected to aid the band in purchasing equipment.
Lavaca district scouts met February 27 at Shiner High School Gym with a hot dog supper. District Chairman Eli Rubin welcomed attendees and leaders split into program sections to plan for Cub Scouting around the World and Overnight Camping. The Capitol Area Council Merit Badge and Hobby Show is set for April 6 and 7 at the Coliseum in Austin, with more details coming to unit leaders. The next district meeting is planned for March 27 in Yoakum at 7 p.m.
Regular meeting of the Shiner Business Men’s Club is scheduled for Thursday March 8 at 7 30 p m at Pustejovsky Cafe. Members unable to attend should call 69 by 3 p m today.
The Arrow staff of Shiner High School sponsors an Easter egg hunt for pre school through fifth grade at Welhausen Park. The event on Thursday March 22 starts at 9 30 a.m. with prizes for finding most and fewest eggs. Admission is 10 cents per school child and 5 cents per pre school child.
A critical shortage of writing materials, especially stationery, is a chief woe of the GI in Korea. Soldiers write on wrapped paper and envelopes with old addresses altered, while home folks are urged to send gifts of writing paper or stationery to support the fighting men.
Nearly 2000 high school musicians are slated to participate in Gonzales Lions Club fourth annual Music Festival. 24 bands from across South Texas and 16 choral groups will perform with All-Festival ensembles directed by Bernard Fitzgerald and Dr. Ralph Ewing.
The Shiner High School faculty and various committees host Public School Week with a 1:30 p.m. program featuring skits from all grades. The public is invited to attend and visiting days were announced for this week. Sponsors include the Masonic Lodges of Texas under the theme Democracy In Action.
Pfc. Arthur Fred Kloppenburg 18 of Sublime Lavaca County was killed in combat in Korea on February 23 after serving with the U S Marines. He had attended Sublime and Sheridan schools and Wharton Junior College before enlisting in 1950. Survivors include his parents and three brothers. He is the first Lavaca County white man to make the supreme sacrifice in Korea.
The 39th anniversary of the Girl Scouts is marked March 5 to 12 with birthday greetings on radio and TV. Listen for Jack Benny's CBS program March 11 6:00 to 10 6:30 p.m. CST and NBCs Shrine Auditorium party March 10 at 12 30 to 1 00 p.m. featuring Hollywood guests and a national figure greeting.
The Gonzales-Lavaca County draft board has about 100 men in 1-A cleared for induction, while monthly calls rise from 14–18 to 28 on March 28 and 33 on April 19. Local Board No. 51 will send 56 men for physical examinations on March 28 as part of the step-up.
The Blessed Virgin Mary Society of the K I Z T will attend Holy Communion at 6 30 Mass on Sunday March 11 and hold a regular business session at 1 30 PM All members are urged to attend both events
The American Legion Auxiliary will meet Thursday March 8 at 7 30 in the Chamber of Commerce room. All members are urged to attend.
The article notes a lack of rain causing concern for planters and merchants. Soil is dry to three or four inches with little planting except in sandy land. Some corn appears near Glaze City and south of Shiner, but extended drought threatens crops and pasturage.
The Community Home Demonstration Club will meet Thursday March 15 at 2 p.m. at Mrs. Charlie Patek’s home. A food demonstration on making griddle cakes will be held. All members are urged to attend and visitors are welcome.
Dietrich Leck 88 died February 27 after a long illness. Funeral services were held March 1 at United Dr. Martin Luther Church Shiner with Rev. Edwin Oehlke officiating. Burial followed at Shiner City Cemetery. Survivors include ten children, twenty four grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
The City of Shiner earned the Maximum Good Fire Record of 25 percent, reducing insurance rates for all property within city limits. The credit applies from March 1, 1951 to March 1, 1952.
