Shapes of traffic signs explained by Texas Safety Assn official

J O Musick of Austin, Texas Safety Association, notes many drivers cannot name sign shapes. He lists octagon for stop diamond for warning round for railroad crossing crossbuck white, triangle for yield and rectangle for laws. Signs warn motorists and pedestrians of dangers and regulations.

A&I Singers to Perform March 12 at Shiner High

The A&I Singers a 42 member group from the A&I campus will present a morning program on Wednesday March 12 at 9 o'clock in the Shiner High School Gym Sponsored by Shiner High School The program includes Sacred Madrigal and light music with works by Beethoven Thompson Verdi Donizetti Schuman and a finale from My Fair Lady The 1958 tour includes Beeville Refugio Ganada Freeport Galveston Texas City Rosenberg Hallottsville Shiner Gonzales Yorktown and Mathis.

Shiner Clippers Baseball Meeting Set At City Hall

All players and residents are invited to a Shiner Clippers baseball meeting at City Hall Friday March 7 at 7 p m to gauge interest for the upcoming season. The meeting warns the team may be dropped if turnout is poor and emphasizes urgent attendance.

Little League Organized For 1958 In Lavaca County

A Hallettsville meeting on February 26 organized the 1958 Lavaca County Little League with players from Shiner Moulton Flatonia and Hallettsville. Gus Strauss elected president with Ernest Petru secretary. Teams sponsored by Shiner American Legion Flatonia American Legion Hallettsville Lion's Club Moulton Chas Luksovsky. Stickers Urged As 1958 Vehicle Inspections Near

Col Homer Garrison Jr of the Texas Department of Public Safety urges motorists to obtain 1958 inspection stickers before April 15 to avoid long lines and delays. He notes 64 percent of Texas vehicles remain uninspected and that late inspections create rush, longer waits, and more required repairs. Local stations Shiner Motor Sales and Stanek and Gloor Garage are named as inspection points.

Stoeltje Rites Held for Frank Stoeltje in San Antonio

Frank Stoeltje of 210 Kal tover died Saturday February 22 at age 70 in a San Antonio hospital born in Austin County. Funeral services were held February 25 at 2 p.m. in the Alamo Funeral Home chapel with burial at Mission Burial Park. Survivors include his wife five daughters one son nine grandchildren three sisters three brothers and many relatives.

Baseball Loop Organized In South Central Texas League

Five original clubs retained membership and three new teams joined the South Central Texas Amateur League at a Sunday Weimar meeting. Members are Shiner Weimar Bernardo Plum and Warda with newcomers La Grange Ammannsville and Swiss Alp. Leonard Lefty Burton Columbus elected president L A Giese Warda vice president and Chas W Priebe La Grange secretary treasurer. A 14 game schedule opens April 14 with two of three playoffs. Curtain raisers Weimar at Plum Ammannsville at Bernardo Shiner at Swiss Alp La Grange at Warda. Carmine Burton and Brenham bids were rejected due to travel distances.

Rotary Conference Held by Waco District 587 Rotarians

Rotary District Conference in Waco February 23–25 drew Rotarians from 32 Central Texas communities totaling over 1600 members. Shiner club president Don Kaspar and Arthur Ward attended with Jean Kaspar. Northwest Waco hosted at Roosevelt Hotel and Karem Shrine Temple. Floyd Johnson named governor-nominee. Arthur Ward honored on Roll of Fame. James Jeffrey spoke at governor's luncheon.

Forfeited Land in 23 Counties Offered for Sale March 31

Austin Feb 28 Seventy seven tracts of forfeited land in 23 Texas counties will be offered for sale by the Veterans' Land Board on March 31. Tracts are spread statewide with counts listed for each county and region. Information requests go to Commissioner Allcorn at the General Land Office in Austin.

Last Rites for Mrs Machacek in Shiner Texas

Funeral services for Mrs Matilda Machacek were held March 1 1958 at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner and Shiner Catholic Church with Rosary the day before. Burial followed at Shiner Catholic Cemetery beside her late husband Peter Machacek who died in 1937. She was 89 with a large family of thirty seven descendants noted. Survivors include six sons three daughters and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. The obituary highlights her Catholic faith longtime residence in Shiner and devotion to family.

Future Of Democracy On KCTI In Gonzales

Knights of Columbus presents a six part radio drama series on the future of democracy.
