A blistering heat wave endured across Texas over the weekend with highs around 110 in multiple cities. Shiner reported 104 degrees in the shade as the scorching heat continued Monday, threatening crops and keeping residents braced for more extreme temperatures.

Shiner Fair and Centennial Preparations Complete

The Shiner Agricultural Fair and Centennial celebration are ready to open with decorations up and flowing. J M Canon reports 80 plus entries for the parade and may seek an extension of city limits for parade room. Ed Herder says the rodeo is ready to ride and many exhibits and merchant booths are prepared.

Unique Window Display Delights at A J Bednar Furniture

The Bednar store unveils a one of a kind display using hand made time killers. An old rail fence forms a shell highway on sand with shell varieties. A pumping water setup on one end and oil derrick on the other. Centerpiece is a fishing tank. 100 horned frogs inhabit the enclosure with a feeding pen using bottles of ants. Motion comes from small phonograph motors.

Roy Gray director general of the Big State Shows promotes the midway attractions and free admission for all children under 12 all week. Captain Dan Cherry the Worlds Super High diver performs a dangerous net dive while the Flying Valentines thrill the crowds. A ladder tower overlooks the fairgrounds as rides, tents, and concessions fill the midway with safe, inexpensive fun for kids.

Treasure Ship Comes In With Bonus for Shiner

Postmaster Herder distributed the bonus bonds promptly as about 132 veterans have received service bonds. Roughly $41,000 has been paid, with final totals possibly reaching $70,000. Buddies are using funds to pay debts, repair homes, and buy items previously unaffordable while some cash in only a portion, others save or leave funds to draw interest.
