The Gazette marks its ninth anniversary with reflections on its town ties and duties to readers. An advertisement proclaims malaria treatment with iron and quinine, priced at 50 cents, promising no cure no pay. A farewell note from JS. W. Hixer announces leaving S. A. Carnes & Co. due to ill health and urges patrons to continue supporting Carnes.
Advice urges families to stock Chamberlains Coke Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy now as the best medicine for bowel complaints for children and adults. Sold by Schultze a Beydler druggists.
Attendees from Shiner for the funeral of the late John Valenta gathered in Flatonia last Tuesday. The list includes F. W. The Shiner finance committee reports the town’s year ending April 8 1902 shows expenses totaling 2586 60 with cash on hand 777 15 and taxes collected Ad valorem 819 50 occupation 757 45 street fines 4 5 00 and a 40 cent tax levy per 100 valuation to fund a nine month school. Also notes life insurance holdings for a deceased resident with policies from Manhattan Aetna Texas Mutual and other companies. A Democratic Precinct Convention is scheduled for June 14 1902 to elect delegates to the county convention. Also mentions resignation from S A Carnes Co and offers Lansing wagons at cost with H Flato & Son. Dr Weyman travels to Mexico. Minnie Olsen wins piano prize in San Antonio contest.
In Beaumont Texas on June 4 a one eighth acre tract on Spindler Pop hill sold for 75000 at a price equaling 600000 per acre. The buyer was the Sarpy Oil and Transportation Company purchasing from George Sarpy.
Last night about 11 o’clock in Hattersville Texas a husband’s wife was grabbed in their home. She identified George Wilson a Black neighbor as the attacker and he was arrested along with his wife, who denies involvement, after prompt police response.
An ad lists Coca Cola and other sodas with ice cream on Wednesdays and notes a business change at 8 A Carnes Co. It also promotes Chamberlains pills through Schultze and Seydler, then announces a grand Bohemian Catholic Union of Texas celebration at Weimar from July 2 to 5 with Bishop Forest attending July 3 and 4.
A. Pfaender of Shiner Texas advertises a Henderson Tire Setting Machine that sets tires cold, quickly and accurately. He claims it’s a notable improvement over the old method and invites customers to see for themselves. All work in his line is solicited and guaranteed.
Mr Wm Halnke returns from Victoria county with an 800 acre tract purchased the same day. Br A Wolters, recently troubled by rheumatism, left for San Antonio with his wife and Frank Johnson, and he recovered well on the trip. Dr J B Clark in Beaumont says oil wells have ceased to gush, a sign that oil prices may rise as producers avoid price weakening. Life at best is short and a cough can be cured by Simmons Cough Syrup, 25 and 50 cents.
