A special agreement lets Shiner Gazette and the New Idea Woman's Magazine run for one year. The deal grants bundled access and cross-publication opportunities between the two regional outlets.
A Lavaca County citizen writes that Captain James H. Deborah the jailer is unemployed and jail doors are open. The letter notes Lavaca’s 4170 paid poll taxes for 1908 09 a population over 30 000 seven penitentiary representatives no lynching and opposition to local option or statewide prohibition citing low tax 19 cents county tax an $80 000 courthouse and good jail in Hallentsville Texas.
After a quiet spell the Menger community resumes notices with wedding details. Miss Clara Wendt wed Otto Dreyer at the bride’s parents home on May 27 with Rev. Wolfsdorf of Yoakum officiating, then the couple rode the train to Galveston and back.
Victor Lyons died after a staged twenty round sparring bout in Austin Texas with George Keppe. Officials including Chief Laughlin and state rangers witnessed the brutal fight without intervening as Lyons collapsed after the eleventh round. The spectacle near city hall and the state capitol drew editorial calls for resignations.
Professor A V Petersen who taught at the Sam and Will Moore Institute for four years has been elected principal of Waelder public school. William Franke and family move to Moulton from Shiner and rent the Moore hotel. Ben Stock family also leaves for Shiner to reside there. Mrs H A Menefee and son return home to Elmendorf after visit with her parents.
Four new telephone lines have been established issuing options for subscribers from Shiner. The Dryer Line No. 3 lists G. W. Blaske, Wm. Brod, Ben Heiman, Jim Lahodny, Tom Marcak, Charles Strauss. Lone Tree Line Hochheim includes John Gloor, Ad Hagens, F. F. Konecny, F. Kasparek Sr., John Kloesel, F. Kasparek Jr., George Moesmeyer, G. Siems, F. Zacharias. Bennett Line features John Huber, Charles Kasper, Karl Mikes, August Mladeko, Mrs. S. McMurrey, Ben Novak, Emil Ullman. Sunset Line lists John Boedeker, John Bohmann, William Berckenhoff, Joe Janish, J. F. Koening, Edm. Pfiel, Sid Walters.
