Connally Wins Lavaca County in Runoff for Governor

Lavaca County backed John Connally by nearly two to one in the Saturday runoff, as he leads the governor’s race with 563 851 votes to Yarborough’s 537 914. Preston Smith and Waggoner Carr also carried statewide races, with Joe Pool topping in the at large congressional contest. The county total was 2612 votes, and all winners advance to the November general election.

Billie Gene Goetz Takes Over Elkins Store in Shiner

Billie Gene Goetz assumed management of the Elkins 5-10-25e Store in Shiner effective June 1, succeeding Ernest Petry who became administrator for the Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital Foundation. Goetz, born November 11, 1936 in Shiner, is a 1955 graduate of Shiner High School and a U S Army veteran now in the Texas National Guard.

Highway 77 and 77A Repair Project Underway

The Texas Highway Department announces the start of construction on U S Highway 77 and 77A from the Lavaca River Bridge in Hallettsville to U S Highway 90A. The Jarbet Company of San Antonio will begin May 31 1962, with completion in 100 working days. Social Security Office Outreach in Shiner June 11

A Social Security representative from Victoria Texas will visit Shiner City Hall at 9 AM Monday June 11 1962 to help filing retirement survivor and disability claims and answer questions about the program Farmers must report and pay taxes on workers earning 150 or more cash wages or 20 days worked per year with 34 percent each for employer and employee taxes totaling 64 percent of wages Form 943 and Form SS-4 guidance are available from the IRS district office or social security office in Victoria.

Ground-Breaking Planned for Trinity Lutheran Home

Shiner hosts a July 8 ground breaking and site blessing for the Trinity Lutheran Home for the aged. The 5 PM ceremony at the construction site near the Lutheran Church will be followed by a 6 PM barbecue at Shiner Legion Park with music, a sermon by Rev. P. L. Wahlberg, and a fundraiser for the home’s building fund attended by a thousand or more from Shiner and nearby areas.

Sacred Heart Parish Feast At Flatonia

The Sacred Heart Parish in Flatonia plans a Sunday celebration on June 10 at the parish hall. Masses at 6 00 a m and 10 00 a m lead to a family dinner at 11 30 and a 5 30 p m supper with sausage stew fried chicken and dressing priced at 1 00 for adults 50 cents for children. Henry F Otto Sr Dies At Victoria

Henry F Otto Sr 79 died Thursday in Victoria after living in Lavaca and Victoria counties. Funeral was at St Marys church, with survivors including his wife Agnes predeceased, two daughters Mrs George Stockbauer and Mrs Delvin Meiners, seven sons, one brother Frank, three sisters, and 27 grandchildren plus seven great grandchildren.
