Revered Lavaca Co Citizen Honored On Century Mark

Relatives and friends gathered to honor Wm Darilek as he reached 103 on May 28. Born in 1844 in Czechoslovakia, he wed Karolina Urban in 1867 and settled in Texas in 1893, living near Flatonia, Henkhaus, and Shiner for decades. He outlived his wife by years, leaving seven sons, one daughter, 26 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren.

Yoakum Tomato Festival Opens June 12 With Queen Tea

Yoakum's 17th annual Tomato Festival runs June 12 to 14. The kickoff features the Queen's Tea at 4 30 p m, coronation at 8 p m, and the Queen's Ball at Oaks Court. Events include parades, air show, rodeos, carnivals, and barbecue meals by veterans groups.

Firemen's Dance Tonight in Shiner at Blucher Park

Citizens will honor the Shi ner Volunteer Fire Depart ment for maintaining Shiner's fire record. Patek's Orchestra will play. Admission general 90 cents with tax. ladies 30 cents with tax. The annual New Year's Eve Dance proceeds benefit the firemen, delayed by weather, and is held tonight at Blucher Park.

The Shiner High School softball diamond hosted eight teams in a week of action. Tuesday results include W F W 13 Legion 12 Mt Olive 7 Shiner Hi 4 and Legion 13 Mt Olive 12. Ben Marcak led a comeback with a 7 to 3 win over Zander Texaco.

Mauri Rose won the Indianapolis Sweepstakes 500 mile race aboard a car on Firestone tires. He averaged 116.338 miles per hour in the 500 mile run marking 24 consecutive years with Firestone tires on the winning cars.

Election Call for Charlottenburg District 21 Thirty-Two Cent Tax

Acting on a petition signed by twenty four qualified voters a special election is set for June 14 1947 at the Charlottenburg Common School District 21 School House to decide if an annual tax of thirty two cents should be added to the present eighteen cents for a total not to exceed fifty cents per one hundred dollars of taxable property. Obelgoner No 1 well near Hallettsville may spark new field

Drilling at Obelgoner No 1 north of Hallettsville blew gas oil and distillate at 9 p m Tuesday May 27 with a roar heard 1 3 4 miles away. Mapping and plans for nearby wells proceed as tests continue to contract depth. Four geologists from Forest Oil Sun Oil and Stanolind work in day and night shifts as preliminary open flow estimates show 65 barrels of distillate and 75 million cubic feet of gas daily with no water.

Six Texans Named as Senate Candidates in 18th District

Six prospective candidates for the 18th senatorial district vacancy caused by the death of Fred Mauritz of Ganado are named. They include Rep. John Bell of Cuero Rep. William Fly of Victoria former Rep. Howard Hartzog of Por LaVa ca John Maurice Turner John C. Beasley of Beeville and former Senator Morris Roberts of Victoria. A special election to fill the seat is not yet called but expected for August 23 by Governor Beauford Jasper.

Yaokium Man Killed In Auto Crash Near Yoakum

Thomas Efford Hamman age 33 died when his car overturned on a curve along the Yoakum Shiner highway one mile from town. He was buried in Hebron Cemetery. Survivors include seven brothers Henry Bill Wesley Hollis Claude Guy and Alvin and two sisters Mrs Ida Einkauf of Fordtran and Mrs Edith Klemicheck of Yoakum.

The Agriculture Department ordered spare stamp No. 12, valid for 10 pounds of sugar, effective immediately to aid early crop canning. A second sugar ration stamp, also for 10 pounds, will be validated by August 1.
