Severe windstorm disrupts town and voting

About six o'clock Saturday evening a strong windstorm tore through the town after a hot day. Torrential rain, downed wires, fallen trees, and damage to St. Ludmila School flue plus the Catholic Church cross were reported. Roughly 150 late voters missed voting due to the storm.

Wendtland Becomes Cashier at Yoakum National Bank

Perry Wendtland is appointed cashier of the Yoakum National Bank tomorrow, after fourteen years at the First National Bank of Shiner as assistant cashier. The community praises his pleasant business manner and social contributions, inviting residents to welcome him with confidence and friendship.

Ed Steves Named Local Pierce Petroleum Agent

Ei M Steves has been appointed local agent for Pierce Petroleum Corporation succeeding G Seim who will shift to a transfer business. Steves will serve the public in selling petroleum products beginning August 1 with a full stock ready.

Kaspar, home from a delightful Havana vacation, was welcomed as a visitor at the city office on Tuesday. Local officials greeted him warmly, noting his pleasant trip and return.

Lavaca County Summer Normal Closes After Eight Week Term

The Lavaca County Summer Normal ends Friday August 1 after an eight week period of work. Examinations for all certificate grades will be held Monday through Thursday next week. Reports from many angles show the school a decided success and worthwhile project. Six faculty members, 103 students, and Shiner’s citizenship praise the educational privileges enjoyed. Some suggest a similar program next summer.

Cotton Late Cotton Bales Expected From Heavy Crop

The district reports a heavy cotton crop with a prolific yield ahead. The first bale last year was brought in by John F. Hajek on July 24. In 1922 the first bale arrived July 25, selling at 25 cents. In 1921 the first bale arrived August 3 and sold for 12 cents.

Miriam Ferguson Leads With 3067 Vote Margin

Dallas July 29 Mrs Miriam Ferguson running as proxy for her husband in the Texas Democratic primary led with 3067 votes over Lynch Davidson for second place after 628494 ballots were counted. Felix Robertson leads the field and will likely be in the August runoff unless court action drops his name. Ferguson or Davidson remain potential opponents.

Commissioners Matula Ponton butchek renominated. Dock Burkett elected commissioner Precincts 3 and 7 by a small majority. Also a want ad seeks a girl for general housework at Gazette office.

Steves and Longorio Partnership Ends in Dissolution

The partnership dating from February 27 1924 between Ed M Steves and Charles R Longorio is dissolved. Steves takes over Shiner Transfer Company entirely while Longorio becomes local agent for Texas Company products. Services to the public continue as before.
