The first bale of cotton for 1937 was brought in Friday July 23 about 7 PM by John Kutac from Mt Olive. It weighed 543 pounds, grade middling, ginned by Shiners Farmers Cooperative Gin and Mill Association. Wolters Bros Co bought it for 18 cents per pound. The bale set a pace two weeks earlier than 1936 due to favorable weather. Chamber of Commerce premium was 10 dollars.

Carey Smith 66, owner and editor of the Bay City Tribune, died in a Galveston hospital. Former editor/owner of the Lockhart Post and Lockhart Courier, he later worked with the Houston Post and Galveston Tribune.
