Ervin Bludau brought in the first Lavaca County bale for 1964, a 550 pound cotton bale ginned at J C Boyd Gin in Hallettsville. Seed sold to Moulton Oil Mill for 50 per ton with a 5 premium. gin owner and local chamber awards total 50 in bonuses.

Local youths enlist in Air Force during July 1964
Three area youths, Mary Fatherine Drabek 18 Robert J. Wuensch 19 and James J. Crawford 20, enlist in the Air Force as of July 14 1964. All are at Lackland AFB to start basic training and will attend technical schools after. Sgt Ralph E Wall the local recruiter urges others to seek education or technical training and provides contact in Victoria.

State To Test Grade A Dairies In Lavaca County
The State will start testing all Grade A dairies in Lavaca County for TB during the week of July 27. Dairymen whose previous test is nearing expiration should notify the county agent's office promptly so their herds can be tested first, ahead of July 27.

Last Rites Held For Mrs. P Zacharias
Mrs. Paul Zacharias nee Minnie Hohlt, 85, passed away July 20 1964 at Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital. The body lay at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner until July 22 then moved to United Dr Martin Luther Church for a 10:00 a.m. service. Interment followed at Shiner City Cemetery. Hartley H. Hepler 75 died in a Linton hospital at 10 40 am Saturday July 18 after a lengthy illness He was a retired Southern Pacific railroad worker of 50 years born in Pawnee Rock Kansas He moved to Taft recently and previously lived in Corpus Christi and Shiner Funeral services were held July 20 at Cage Marshall Funeral Chapel Taft with burial in Taft Cemetery He is survived by two brothers Herb of Alta Loma and John H Hepler Jr of Hitchcock and 10 nephews and nieces.

Flag and Pole Presented to Lutheran Home for the Aged
On Independence Day 1964 VFW Post 6209 and Ladies Auxiliary donated a new flag pole and a 50 star flag to Trinity Lutheran Home for the Aged in Shiner. Ewald Erdelt presented to custodian George Fiedler and Rev. F E Eilers with Rev Edwin Oehlke represented. Victoria Post 4146 led an honor guard and raised the flag while all sang. Commander Erdelt thanked all who helped transport and install the pole.

Bobby Buske Receives Lonestar Farmer Degree At State Meet
Bobby Buske of Shiner Future Farmers of America earned the Lonestar Farmer degree at the state FFA convention in San Antonio. The degree recognizes a strong project program with at least five hundred dollars earned and leadership in FFA school and community activities. He is elected local chapter vice president and has competed on two livestock judging teams, attending district and area meetings. He is the son of Mr and Mrs James Buske.

Car Flips When Tire Blows Out Near Shiner
A 1959 Chevrolet station wagon rolled after a left rear tire blew on Highway 90A at the Edwin Pfuhl farm 1.3 miles west of Shiner. Dr. Kenneth A. Starling of Houston drove east. no injuries were reported though the car sustained heavy damage. Three monkeys used for research were inside the vehicle.

Colt .45s Face Cubs in Family Weekend at Colt Stadium
Vic Roznovsky of Shiner is a Cubs catcher during a three game Houston visit July 24 to 26 billed as Family Weekend with free admission for children 16 and under and $1.50 seat reductions for accompanied kids. The Cubs, led by Williams, Santo and Banks, have dominated Houston this season. A Father Son Game and Boys Baseball finals are also on the weekend schedule.
