A contract was signed July 13 with Bohlmann Bros Construction Co to build the Shiner Methodist Church new sanctuary education building pastor's study and fellowship hall with kitchen. Ground breaking Sunday July 23 at 5 00 p m on the site invites all church members and friends. Construction starts July 24 and ends about December 23 with sale of frame buildings and two lots at the old location.

Curtis Havel Returns Home From Germany Army Post
Curtis Havel came home July 7 from Fulda Germany where he served with the 84th Army Band. A jet flight from New York to Houston brought him to his parents Mr and Mrs Jerry B Havel Mary Ann and Sidney. He plans to open Raab Studio in Moulton after learning photography in Germany. He met Jerome Pustka aboard the ship and accompanied the Havel family to Shiner.

Lavaca County Farmers Union plans a Legion Park gathering in Shiner on Friday July 21 at 8 p.m. Guest speaker will be Jay Naman executive vice president of Texas Farmers Union. Wade Bratcher says officers will be elected and invites all members and interested farmers to attend. Henry Henke serves as president and John Grahmann as vice president.

Frank B. Gertner died July 6 1961 in Shiner at age 77 after a brief illness. He lived near Shiner with his daughter and son in law the past 16 years and is survived by four daughters a son a sister a brother and 14 grandchildren. Funeral services were held July 8 at Smith Funeral Home and St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial in Moulton Catholic Cemetery. He was a retired farmer and SPJST member.

Joe C. Johnson 43 of Rt. 4 Yoakum shot himself at home Sunday July 16 1961 after illness and psychiatric help. Justice of the Peace said death due to gunshot wounds. Final rites with military honors held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Survivors include wife Ruby Harbish Wehman a stepson and stepdaughter, mother and siblings. He served in World War II and had worked in multiple counties.

Louis Trautwein longtime Shiner resident and former mayor died July 12 1961 at Dr Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital at age 94 He served as Shiner mayor for eleven years and was active in church and civic life His funeral at United Dr Martin Luther Church included a regional pallbearer list and interment at Shiner City Cemetery Surviving relatives include wife Hilda Crosby and four granddaughters with extended family across Texas and New Mexico.

Joseph Frank Koncaba of Shiner died suddenly at home July 11 at 4 15 am at age 75 6 months 18 days. Funeral services were at St Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church with Requiem High Mass and burial in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. He was a longtime blacksmith and employee at multiple local firms, survived by wife Mary two daughters two granddaughters two sisters and a brother in Czechoslovakia. Local businesses closed for the service and many friends attended from distant points.
