Rites Held For Mrs. Henry Hajek

Mrs. Henry Hajek aged 90 of Victoria died June 24 1962 at Citizens Memorial Hospital after two days of confinement. Funeral services were held at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner and Shiner Catholic Church with interment in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. She was born in Netolovec Czechoslovakia and married Henry V Hajek in Praha. Survived by three sons six daughters many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was active in Catholic Church and KJZT SPJST Lodges and was noted for a long life of Christian service.

Republican Party Meeting in Hallettsville July 11 1962

Public meeting of the Republican Party State Headquarters will be held at the County Courthouse Hallettsville on July 11 1962 at 7:00 p.m. Committeeman William N. Lehrer and Regional Field Director William J. Blythe will conduct the session to unite Lavaca County citizens supporting Republican candidates in November.

Lavaca County Commissioners Court accepts the resignation of Louis Kurtz as Constable for Justice of the Peace Precinct No 3 in Shiner. The notice states the resignation was presented to the Court this week.

Two Killed in Weekend Highway Crashes Near Hallettsville

A Houston man Thomas Buddy Theide 31 and Rev Father Roman Marcus Janak 48 of Ammannsville died in separate weekend crashes near Hallettsville Texas. Theide died when his car collided head on with a pickup on High 90 A Saturday night June 30. Janak died Sunday morning July 1 when his car skidded in heavy rain on Highway 77 A and was struck by a vehicle driven by John Thomas Neal of Haughton Louisiana. Neal and his wife Johnnie and son John H Neal were injured. Neal suffered multiple injuries and his family serious injuries. The pickup occupants Raymond Parr 38 and Fleetwood L Perry 23, both of Victoria and Yoakum respectively, were hospitalized with serious injuries. Funeral services for Theide and Janak were planned in Gonzales and Ammannsville with multiple relatives listed. Investigators continued work Monday with no charges filed yet.

Lavaca Screwworm Eradication Fund Falls Short

Lavaca County residents are urged to contribute to the Lavaca Screwworm Eradication Fund, now at $9,393.82, with local banks and community committeemen listed for donations. Officials report statewide progress, with 90 percent fewer screw worm cases so far and plans to triple sterile fly releases next July from the Mission plant.

Rites Held For Mrs Bertha Oehlke in Yorktown

Mrs Bertha Oehlke nee Hoffmann died June 30 1962 at 78 after illness. Services were at St Paul Lutheran Church Yorktown conducted by Rev W C Probst with burial in St Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Survived by eight sons one daughter twenty two grandchildren twenty great grandchildren six brothers four sisters and numerous in laws and relatives.

Civil Defense Classes Resume July 11 13 at Shiner Schools

Civil Defense sessions restart July 11 through 13 at 8 00 PM in Shiner Public Schools with the Education for Survival course. Texas leads the nation in adult Civil Defense participation with over 100000 completing the program as communities plan protective measures for natural or war caused disasters.

GVEC Membership Meeting Draws 2,500 In Gonzales

About 2,500 people attended the Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative twenty third annual membership meeting at Apache Field on June 21. Eight hundred forty eight members registered the largest turnout in GVEC history. Dr Charles Jarvis of San Marcos hosted the event with humor and insight as the meeting began at 8:00 p.m. and adjourned just after 10 p.m. A Shiner band, the VFW Toppers, played during registration. The agenda included election of three directors for three years.

Impressive Rites Held Friday For F R Mergenthaler

Funeral services for Frederick R. Mergenthaler 93 were held June 29 in Shiner with Rev. Edwin J. Oehlke officiating. Masonic graveside rites were led by Perry Davis of Yoakum at Shiner City Cemetery. He had long worked in insurance and served in local civic roles. Survivors include son Fred J. Mergenthaler and daughters Mrs. Wm Miculka and Clara Mergenthaler. He died June 27, 1962.

Delores Ann Pesek Becomes Sister Diane Marie in June 1962

Delores Ann Pesek was received into the Sisters of the Divine Providence on June 21 1962 and took the name Sister Diane Marie. She is the daughter of Rudolph and (Rudolph) Pesek of Wied and a 1960 graduate of St Ludmila Academy. Family members attended the investiture and her brother Leonard Pesek serves in the U S Army in California.
