Big Fire Hits Yoakum Damaging Several Blocks

A major two story blaze swept through Yoakum city damaging the Woodmen Lodge room opera house and adjacent Edwards Gilbert Co mercantile. Losses total around 28 000 for the Woodmen building and 34 000 for Edwards Gilbert with other firms and utilities suffering substantial damage and some goods saved. Lou Hertz suffered the loss of robes and furniture. The Daily Herald notes 8000 estimated loss and 4000 insurance.

Resolutions of Respect for John M. Krueger

The Half Moon Camp No 117 W O W adopts resolutions mourning the death of John M. Krueger who died January 26 1918 after a brief illness. The group expresses sympathy to his family and orders resolution copies published in the Shiner Gazette and filed in camp minutes.

Wack Ball At Rocky Site Draws Large Masked Crowd

A warm pleasant Saturday night attracted a very large crowd to a Wack Ball at the Rocky site with many attendees in masks. Prizes were awarded to Bettie Flessner, Eda Schaefer, Tillie Heinsohn, Mary Lahodny, Joe Handel, and the team Ramish and Gerdes. Judges included Jim Kral and Frank Jaks among others. 242 dance tickets were sold and attendees departed content. Postmaster Herder and his family visited La Grange on Sunday.

Term examinations begin as Shiner High receives new books and atlas tools to meet State Department standards for science and history. The school seeks affiliation in Mathematics English History Cryics German and science while preparing for Interscholastic League events at Halletts ville and a future basketball game against Flatonia. Junior Red Cross materials arrive this week and its volunteers gain prominence in town.

Death of John M. Krueger in Shiner Texas

John M. Krueger 60 died after months of illness. Funeral held January 27 in Shiner with Rev. Wm. Dzie. Survived by six children Tell, Moritz, Adele, Edith, Helie and Melanie. He was born in Barkowitz Province Posen Prussia and served as postmaster for Shiner. He belonged to Woodmen of the World Hermann Sons and A P J S T orders and carried insurance in them.
