German-born Shiner resident George Sander Sr dies at 72

Former Shiner resident George Sander Sr died after a two week illness from a heart ailment. He passed away Wednesday January 21 at 4 a.m. at his half-sister Elizabeth Freytag’s home in Moulton. He was 72 years old, born September 18, 1869 in Oldenburg Germany. He settled in Wei mar after immigrating in 1888, married Sophia Meyer, moved to a farm near Shiner in 1906, and widow Sophia died in September 1921. He had lived in Moulton for 12 years. Funeral was held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Eschenburg Funeral Parlor with interment at Shiner City Cemetery beside his wife. Rev. R. Schuetze officiated. Pallbearers were Albert W. Meyer Anton DeHarde Fritz Sander Emil G. Meyer Alfred Stoeltje and Robert Dreyer. The Lutheran Choir sang at the parlor and grave. He is survived by four children George Jr. of Weimar Alfred of Corpus Christi Alma Clyde Rucker of Mt. Belvieu and Olga Sander of Gonzales plus two half-sisters and 12 grandchildren. The Gazette offers sympathy to the bereaved.

Meeting Of Shiner Farmers Coop Gin And Mill

The stockholders of the Shiner Farmers Cooperative Gin and Mill Association met January 26 in City Hall for the nineteenth annual meeting. John H. Elsik chaired, Ed Nollkamper was secretary, and J. E. Montgomery spoke on cooperative marketing laws. Members voted to amend the charter and raise capital stock to 50000, with a unanimous board reelected to serve another year.

Five Lavaca County youths enlisted in the Regular Army and Army Air Corps during the first fifteen days of January. Luther L. Davis John H. Gardner of Yoakum Frank L. Timm of Hallettsville Alfons J. Daylight Saving Time Begins February ninth

President Roosevelt signed the daylight saving bill on Tuesday and it becomes effective at 2 a m on February 9 for interstate commerce and federal government activities. Observance is expected to spread nationwide as clocks move ahead one hour. The measure will end six months after the war unless Congress votes to terminate early.

Victor Matus and Bernice Gerdes were married by Judge Jack Sutherland at the courthouse in Corpus Christi on Monday at 11 30 am. The bride, daughter of Hy Gerdes, spent much of her youth in Shiner and attended the local high school. The groom, son of L L Matus, is well regarded in town. The couple are now at home with the groom's parents.

Blackout and Air Raid Protection Ordinance in Shiner Texas

City ordinance empowers the mayor to enact blackout rules during war, define emergency lighting, and regulate traffic and evacuations to protect life and property. It allows drills, requires written orders, and permits appointing special fire and police wardens to enforce air raid measures.

Lavaca County producers are advised on plowing under winter cover crops to satisfy the 25 percent soil erosion resisting crop requirement. Crops must remain until March 1 or meet soil building practice No. 26 via a sturdy growth turned under for green manure. Grazed crops do not meet No. 26 and must wait. Frank Tassler Elected President of Farmers League

At the Farmers League annual meeting in Hallettsville on Sunday Frank Tassler of Shiner was elected president for 1942 with Anton Hmood of Moravia as vice president and F R Olsovsky of Moravia as secretary treasurer. The gathering discussed cooperative buying of cotton seed, nut oil production in Lavaca County, soil conservation cover crops, farm financing by Gonzales Production Credit Association, and urged members to collect scrap iron for national defense. The treasury stood at 79.73 dollars and outgoing chair Theo Golsch received thanks. next meeting set for Wied on the third Sunday in April.
