The last day to count school age children for the 1967 census is January 31. Parents with children aged 6 to 18 as of September 1 1967 should contact Mrs Edward Kasper to ensure inclusion. Those entering school at age 6 for the first time in September should be counted for the summer pre school program.
State Liquor Control Board inspector Billy Liddell is back in the Victoria area after over a year away. Liddell, moved from Victoria four years ago and left in April 1965 for Houston, arrived January 3 from Galveston to resume duties. He and Ed Armstrong will oversee Victoria, Calhoun, DeWitt, Jackson and Lavaca Counties.
The Freshmen Class of St. Paul High School will sponsor a bake sale on Saturday January 28 at Patek's Meat Market downtown. Doors open at 8 30 am offering kolaches strudels noodles pies bread and more to support the class.
The KTSA Disc Jockeys host St Paul St Ludmila Exs in a men’s basketball clash at Shiner Catholic Parish Gym on February 8 at 8:00 p.m. The St Paul Athletic Club sponsors the event with advance tickets from club members or school boards.
Shirley Jean Goetz, infant daughter of Billie Gene and Norma Lea Goetz of Shiner, died at Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital Saturday afternoon. Funeral services were held January 22 at Buffington Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. F E Eilers. burial followed in Shiner City Cemetery. Survivors include grandparents Herbert Wegener, Willie E Goetz, and Selma Zander. paternal great grandmother Selma Zander, all of Shiner.
City of Shiner is featured in the January issue of Showcase Magazine a KTBC radio and TV publication mailed monthly to Central Texans. The issue includes programing news cultural events schedules and station activities plus information on receiving a free copy by writing to P O Box 1155 Austin Texas 78767.
Shiner Public School P-TO will honor all past presidents of the Mother's Club, P-TA and P-TO with a special program and ceremony on Thursday February 9. Founder's Day will be observed with refreshments and a social hour. All members and past presidents are urged to attend. visitors are welcome.
Voters aged 21 to 60 must register by January 31 1967 to vote in all elections. Those turning 21 in 1967 may also register by that date. Jim Pesek died at 2 00 am January 18 1967 in Scottsdale Arizona at age 59 9 15 He was buried after Requiem Mass in Shiner Texas He is survived by daughter Georgia Ann Tenberg and three grandchildren, plus brothers and a sister The service included a rosary at Buffington Chapel and graveside rites in Shiner Catholic Cemetery
Charlie J. Kurtz of Yoakum age 64 died January 9 1967 in M D Anderson Hospital Houston after five days as patient. Rosary was recited January 11 at Buffington Yoakum. Requiem Mass January 12 at St Ann Church Yoakum officiated by Rev John Matocha. Survived by two sons Edwin and Alfonse two daughters Pauline Berckenhoff Helen Vinklarek a stepdaughter Elizabeth Kurtz. two brothers Joe and Clement. two sisters Katie Dolezal Agnes Wiles. 22 grandchildren three great grandchildren two stepgrandchildren. He was born January 28 1902 in Shiner and lived in Shiner Gonzales County Petersville Yoakum Cuero Placedo. Funeral arrangements with Buffington.
The nation’s top polka group Six Fat Dutchmen from New Ulm Minnesota will headline a two day engagement at Bill Mraz Ballroom 835 West 34th St Houston Saturday and Sunday January 28 and 29 A Sunday battle dance with Bill Mraz Orch will feature barbecue all afternoon The group directed by Harold Loeffelmacher will be featured in a musical salute Sunday 3 to 4 p m on KULP Radio 1390 from Texas Home of Polka Music at the Bill Mraz Ballroom

Mrs. Mary Huebner Zappe age 83 9 months 21 days died January 17 1967 at Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital Shiner. Funeral Mass was January 18 at Saints Cyril and Methodius Church with graveside rites for relatives and friends from Shiner and nearby towns. Survived by daughter Beatrice Zappe two sons H Arthur Zappe and William Zappe Jr two granddaughters and two great grandchildren. Her husband William Zappe died in 1960. She was a lifelong Shiner resident and active in Catholic groups.
