Shiner Highboys keep winning streak with three straight wins

The Shin er Highboys, A team now at nineteen straight victories this season, beat Waelder 66 to 4 and Schulenburg 42 to 16. Substitutes saw extensive action as the team extended its winning run while B team remains undefeated at seven wins. Upcoming home games against Apea and other foes are listed for the week with Shiner A and B squads scheduled to face Yorktown and Halletts.

Extension of Highway 200 Planned

L. E. Denmark of the Chamber of Commerce led a Gonzales Hallettsville delegation to Wharton for talks with the Wharton Chamber about extending Highway 200 from Hallettsville to Wharton. Wharton officials welcomed the idea and pledged county right of way. A survey will be requested to plan the route and secure rights and fencing.

Mrs. Peck Welhausen hosted the Methodist Ladies Aid on January 18 with Rev. Guyon leading prayers. Officers were elected: President Arthur Kasper, Vice President Gus Wolters, Secretary Ernest Hajek, Assistant Secretary O W Dreyer, Treasurer. Study Leader S A Thulemeyer and Assistant Study Leader Max L Wolters. Committees were named and flowers placed for February. Donations of six dollars were sent to the San Antonio Mission Home and Training School. Helen Duffy Parker was honored. New members A Guyon and Emmet Busch welcomed. Contract Set for Highway 200 and School Project Progress

Five Calves Die in Pasture Loss for Hugo Pohler

Hugo Pohler reported the death of five calves found in the pasture last Friday. A veterinarian investigated and an analysis is ongoing to determine the cause of the loss.

Shiner Boy Enlists in the U S Navy

Dennis Eugene Baca of Route 2 Box 6 Shiner Texas enlisted in the Navy Jan 16 at the Navy Recruiting Station Houston along with twenty other South Texas district youths. He left Houston for Norfolk Virginia for three months training then a leave before assignment to a ship. Dennis is the son of Mr and Mrs Aug C Baca and is wished success in his chosen field.

In a close contest Shiner Squaws beat Prarie Lea 15-14 after extra period. The halftime tied 9-9 and the final was 13-13 before extension. Viola Broz grabbed a key rebound and scored the winning basket as fouls mounted and referee Jowers praised the officiating.

Memorial for Wm J Tomasco in Shiner obituary

Wm J Tomasco died Sunday at 8 10 p m after a long illness. Funeral services were held at United Dr Luther Church with interment in City Cemetery. He was born August 15 1886 in Lavaca County and lived in Shiner since childhood. He served on the City Council and in the local fire department, and was active in the Lutheran Church and community affairs. Surviving are his wife of 31 years, two brothers, one sister, and two nephews. Pallbearers were city officials. The community offers condolences and recollections of his public spirit and artistry in interior decorating.

Mrs J H Hepler Funeral in Hitchcock

Mrs J H Hepler 76 died in a Galveston hospital last Thursday and funeral services were held in Hitchcock last Friday attended by her son H H Hepler and Mrs Cecile Mondy among others. Surviving are three sons H H of Shiner H D of Alta Loma and J H of Hitchcock, a daughter Ree, ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Friends of the family extend sympathy.
