Hoover Urges Caution In Baby Sitter Choice

FBI Director J Edgar Hoover warns parents to know their baby sitter after several kid napging cases. He notes many sitters are trustworthy but a few pose a risk and warns that a child abduction is not worth a night out. An exchange reports flocked tumble weeds sold in Dallas for 7.50 a bouquet and a Dallas resident eyeing land in Lubbock to make a million from weeds.

The December 24 issue closes volume 67 as 68 begins January 7 1960 with thanks to advertisers subscribers and reporters. Man Charged With Arson After Shiner Fire

Jonah Mayberry, 69, was arrested in Shiner after allegedly dousing wallpaper with a match and starting a fire at Margaret Morgan’s home on December 25. He confessed to Sheriff Long on December 27 and was jailed in Hallettsville on December 26, later released on bond.

Voters urged to pay poll taxes before January 31 1960

Lavaca County and Shiner voters face a January deadline to pay poll taxes to be eligible for elections this year. The final date is January 31 but offices close on Sunday so payments must be made by January 30. Sheriff Long seeks re election against Leland Moore. District Judge Holt will not run. Boethel currently the only announced candidate. State Rep Stanley Boysen seeks re election. Democratic Primary on May 7. more announcements expected as races form.

Paul L. Surovec Buried In Shiner

Funeral services for Paul L. Surovec were held in Shiner and Gonzales after his death at 4:00 p.m. Sunday January 3. A Requiem High Mass followed a 8:30 a.m. service at Buffington Funeral Home and burial was in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Surovec, 67, was born in Czechoslovakia and lived in Gonzales. survivors include his wife two sons four daughters two brothers and one sister and six grandchildren.

ODHS Lodges Install Officers in Moulton January 10

A chartered bus from San Antonio will bring the Louise Schuetze Hermann Sons Lodge Drill Team and visiting grand lodge officials to install seven South Central Texas area Sons of Hermann Lodges in Moulton on Sunday January 10. Albert Velek 84 Buried After Shiner Funeral Services

Albert Velek 84 died December 31 1959 at Wagner Hospital after a 12 day illness. Funeral January 1 1960 at Buffington Funeral Home and Shiner Catholic Church with burial in SPJST Cemetery. pallbearers from Shiner Houston Alvin and Gonzales area. He was born April 20 1875 in Netolice Czechoslovakia, married Frances Hodanek 1898, lived in Flatonia Dilworth Shiner and later. Rites In Shiner For John Gallia

Funeral services for John Gallia of Route 2 Shiner were held at Buffington Funeral Home and Shiner Catholic Church. Burial was in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Gallia, 89, died December 27 at his sister’s home after living with relatives, born in Czechoslovakia and immigrating in 1870. He is survived by siblings and numerous nieces and nephews.
