Man Charged With Arson After Shiner Fire
Jonah Mayberry, 69, was arrested in Shiner after allegedly dousing wallpaper with a match and starting a fire at Margaret Morgan’s home on December 25. He confessed to Sheriff Long on December 27 and was jailed in Hallettsville on December 26, later released on bond.

Lavaca County and Shiner voters face a January deadline to pay poll taxes to be eligible for elections this year. The final date is January 31 but offices close on Sunday so payments must be made by January 30. Sheriff Long seeks re election against Leland Moore. District Judge Holt will not run. Boethel currently the only announced candidate. State Rep Stanley Boysen seeks re election. Democratic Primary on May 7. more announcements expected as races form.

Funeral services for Paul L. Surovec were held in Shiner and Gonzales after his death at 4:00 p.m. Sunday January 3. A Requiem High Mass followed a 8:30 a.m. service at Buffington Funeral Home and burial was in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Surovec, 67, was born in Czechoslovakia and lived in Gonzales. survivors include his wife two sons four daughters two brothers and one sister and six grandchildren.

Funeral services for John Gallia of Route 2 Shiner were held at Buffington Funeral Home and Shiner Catholic Church. Burial was in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Gallia, 89, died December 27 at his sister’s home after living with relatives, born in Czechoslovakia and immigrating in 1870. He is survived by siblings and numerous nieces and nephews.
