Newman named vice chairman of Penitentiaries Committee

Texas House member J. T. Newman of Cuero is appointed vice chairman of the Penitentiaries Committee for the 61st session. He also joins four additional panels Commerce and Manufacturing, Conservation and Reclamation, Livestock, and Urban Affairs. Newman represents District 42 covering DeWitt Goliad Jackson and Lavaca Counties.

Miss Carol Janda Completes Cosmetology Course

Shiner Catholic Science Fair March 2 at Parish Gym

Six classes of junior and senior high students from local Catholic schools present 105 entries across chemistry physiology medicine mathematics biology physics and general science. Judging March 1 by Southwest Texas State College professors. public viewing starts 8 30 a m March 2 with photos for winning entrants at 10 a m. Winners may advance to El Campo Regional Fair March 21.

The Shiner Independent School District schedules an April 5, 1969 election to fill two expiring board terms held by Gus D. Nollkamper and Henry J. Fietsam. Candidates must file by March 6, 1969 with the superintendent in writing on official forms.

Gun Wound Fatal To Edward Seitz In Yoakum

Edward D. Seitz a 37 year old Yoakum businessman died from a shotgun wound to the chest ruled a homicide or accident by Justice of the Peace Cloud Jacob. The body was found near his pickup on a side road off U S 77A after his wife reported him missing on February 15 1969. He is survived by his wife Earline and two children Earl and Elaine. Funeral services were held February 17 at Buffington Chapel and St Josephs Catholic Church in Yoakum with burial at St Josephs Cemetery.

Winn boy earns Eagle Award at Blue and Gold Banquet

Robert E. Winn, 14, son of Edwin E. Winn and wife from Shiner, receives Scouting’s Eagle Award at a Blue and Gold Banquet on February 20, 1969. Rites Held For Mike J. Benes Sr

Mike J. Benes Sr. aged 78 7 7 died February 17 1969 at his Shiner home. Funeral February 20 at Buffington Shiner with Rev F E Eilers officiating. Interment in Shiner SPJST Cemetery. Survived by second wife Frances and two sons Frank and Jim Benes plus eleven grandchildren. He was born in 1890 in Czechoslovakia and became a U S resident after immigration at age 18.

Visitors are invited to tour the campuses, meet teachers, and view department exhibits and the annual science fair. GVEC Receives National Safety Council Award of Merit

The Guad alupe Valley Electric Cooperative earned an Award of Merit from the National Safety Council for a record of 1,150,595 man-hours worked without a lost-time accident from March 12, 1963, to December 31, 1968. Eagle Award Presented to Darrell Schlenker at Pack 231 Banquet

Darrell James Schlenker, 14, received the Eagle Award at the Blue and Gold Banquet of Pack 231 on February 20, 1969. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward H. Schlenker, he joined Troop 231 after Cub Scout graduation and has served as den chief scribe and patrol leader. He trained at Camp Tom Wooten and earned the honor camper and promarksman awards.

Rites Held In Robstown For Tom Hubka

Funeral services for Thomas E. Hubka were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday February 12 at St. John's Catholic Church in Robstown. Hubka died February 10 in a Robstown hospital after a brief illness at age 62. Burial followed in Robstown Cemetery with Robstown Funeral Home in charge. He was born December 11 1906 in Shiner Texas and survived by one daughter and three sisters.

County Trustee Election Set for April 5 in Lavaca County

A rural district and Lavaca County trustee election is scheduled for Saturday April 5. Incumbents Franklin Hlavac of Precinct 1 and William J Meyer of Precinct 2 will seek re election. Candidate filings with the county superintendent are due by March 4.
