The Lavaca County Depository in Halletsville was awarded to the first bidder and will hold county funds for two years at 4.02 percent. Jos. Kopecky bought a new Overland car in Houston as agency owner. The Mothers Club held its first 1918 meeting with officer elections postponed to February 13 and later elected officers. A financial statement shows receipts of 498.51 and a balance of 253.41 with ongoing club activities.
George Bufford, 22, working for Kid Moody two miles south of Dalton City, is said to have set a ten hour corn shucking record. He reportedly shucked 283 bushels and 40 pounds in ten hours, weighing the lot after hauling from the field.
