Members of the VFW Auxiliary of Shiner sponsor a food and bake sale at Patek's Market downtown starting at 9:00 a.m. Saturday February 27. Cakes pies kolaches bread and other items will be available. Plan now to call for a choice selection.
The Falcon Petroleum Company moved equipment to drill a wildcat well near Shiner, creating a demand for lodging. Joe Patek Sr offered his upstairs building, the former Koch building, and furnished apartments to house day and night crews, earning community commendation for foresight and support of industrial awakening.
T. A. Dick Nelson 47 died when his 1960 pickup left the curve on the Cuero Yoakum highway two miles north of Cuero. He was thrown from the vehicle and died at a Cuero hospital. Nelson lived in Corpus Christi and worked for Miller and Fox Drilling Co. He is survived by his wife Lucille, a son Bill, his mother Margaret White and A. B. White.
Colonel Charles R. Tips of the Texas State Historical Survey Committee urges Texans to observe March 2 to April 21 by re dedicating hearts to the fifty destiny deciding days. He highlights the 124th anniversary of the Texas Declaration of Independence at Washington on the Brazos March 2, a Alamo visit March 6, Goliad march 27, and San Jacinto Battle ground April 21. Governor Price Daniel praises John Wayne for making the Alamo a symbol of freedom.
A rare caravan of stars visits St. Joseph Gym Yoakum on February 27 at 8 p.m. The Downbeats Harry Charles Night Club Thunderbirds Van Knight Zeke Greene and the Relyeas perform with Ricci Ware emceeing from KTLA San Antonio. Fans of all ages urged to attend.
The Music Department of St. Ludmila's Academy presents Carol Jean Gladney in a voice recital Sunday February 28 at 7 30 p.m. at the school. The fifteen year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Arthur Gladney is a Stevens Mayo School sophomore in Hallettsville and plays trumpet in the school band. Her sister Rose Mary Gladney will contribute piano selections. Due to limited space facilities the recital will be invitational.
The Gonzales County Farm Bureau invites members and friends to a Saturday open house at their new office in Gonzales between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. West side of Texas Hero's Square Plaza Hotel building. County President Vernon Colwell and directors will greet guests and register attendees. Prizes include a Sunbeam Electric Fryer and Electric Ice Cream Freezer awarded at 3:00 p.m. Drawing open to adult family members. you need not be present to win. Refreshments served.
Miss Clara Ruhmann of Yoakum reports the death of her brother-in-law William F. Kram 76 of Woodland California. He died February 18 after years of ill health. Born in Germany he came to America as a child, married Ida Ruhmann in 1907, and had four daughters and two sons. He belonged to Hermann Sons Lodge and Evangelical Church and was a farmer.
The fourth grade classes of Shiner Public School will broadcast a Salute to Texas on KCTI Gonzales Wednesday March 2 and Saturday March 5 at 1 30 p m. The program features songs and musical numbers and honors Texas Independence Day.
A meeting at the Weimar Fire Station on February 23 aims to reorganize the South-Central Texas Amateur Baseball League for 1960. Officers will be elected and teams discussed, with plans for openings and schedules to follow. The eight-club loop last year included Bernardo, La Grange, Shinier’s Clippers, and others.
Charles Sestak of Shiner FFA caught a calf in the San Antonio Stock Show calf scramble. He was the sixth to finish and earned a twenty five dollar purchase certificate. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Sestak and was guided by local FFA advisor Ray Seale.
Brother Cornelius Corcoran CSC, assistant professor at St. Edward's University, will speak to St. Ludmila's High School students in Shiner on February 29. He holds an MBA from Texas, studied law and accounting at Penn, and belongs to the Catholic Business Education Association.
Father Quintanna editor of La Vos spoke to the Shiner Knights of Columbus and parishioners at the parish gym on February 18. He based his talk on Catholic Press Month and inspired the audience. A brief K of C business meeting followed. Members were urged to attend a ham shoot on February 21 at Edgar’s Drive In and a dance on February 28 at Legion Park to raise funds.
Richard D. Krause joins the Texas Highway Patrol in Hallettsville serving with Wilbert Horstmann. Transferred from Weslaco, he comes from San Antonio and studied in Corpus Christi. Krause is married with a 2.5 year old son and attends Baptist Church. he begins duties March 1.
Sid Feder, 50, a nationally known sports writer and author, died in a Victoria hospital on Monday February 22. He served as an Associated Press sports writer and later as publicity director for the Victoria Rosebuds. He wrote for the Victoria Advocate column Longhorns and Short Tales and authored Murder Inc The Luciano Story. He is survived by a wife two daughters a brother a sister and five grandchildren.
Former Sweet Home resident Jacob Gallia died in a Corpus Christi hospital on February 11. Funeral services were held February 13 at the Catholic Church in Corpus Christi with interment at Sweet Home Catholic Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Father G Kuratko officiated. Survivors include two sisters and several children, with his wife having died 24 years ago and a son Laddie deceased in service.
ST. LUDMILA'S Academy PTA meets on Monday March 7 at 3 45 p m in the high school. CUB PACK 232 annual Blue and Gold Banquet on Monday February 29 at 7 30 p m at the Parish Gym. BOY SCOUT Troop 232 and Cub Pack 232 attend Holy Communion Sunday March 6 at 6 30 Mass.
Yoakum municipal golf course in prime shape for its largest year as about 100 members from Yoakum and nearby towns plan to expand with family rates. An April tournament is being organized by Cleo Hagan C W Denman and Wm Browning.
Major Kent Odom of Region 3 DPS warned that the April 15 1960 deadline for motor vehicle inspections in Texas is fixed with no extensions. In Lavaca County 9 278 vehicles exist and 1 980 or 21 percent have been inspected leaving about 534 600 statewide for the next sixty days. Captain Lawrence of the MVIS urged motorists to inspect today for safety.
Mrs. Mary Ann Esse, a second grade Maryland teacher, was injured in a car accident in Washington D C. She suffered a serious leg cut and other injuries and is confined to Hadley Hospital in Washington D C. Her husband Allen Esse accompanied her to the Marine base and notified the Sedlmeyer family.
The Eastern Archdiocesan CYO boys and girls basketball tourney will be held at the parish gym on Sunday February 28 starting at 9:00 am and running through 9:00 pm. Twelve teams will participate and a game starts each hour. Public invited.

The Cuero Guadalupe Valley Water and Sanitation Association will receive the Southwest Section award from the American Water Works Association for having the highest percent of State Health Department approved public water supplies within its boundaries. Texas Department of Public Safety announces entrance examinations for patrolmen on April 12 13 and 14 in multiple cities. Applicants aged 21 to 35 must file by April 1 have a high school diploma be physically fit of good character and meet height and weight requirements. A Social Security Office representative from Victoria will be at Shiner City Hall at 9 30 AM Friday February 26 to help residents file retirement survivor or disability claims and answer program questions.
