Washington reports more than 850 persons perished in the North Atlantic after enemy submarines torpedoed two American passenger cargo ships carrying military personnel and civilian war workers. The disaster is the worst loss of life for the United States in the Battle of the Atlantic, with most casualties from Army Navy Marines and Coast Guard.

Shiner to Save on Fire Insurance with 25 Percent Credit
Austin February 25 a 25 percent fire record credit will cut fire insurance premiums for Shiner policies for 12 months from March 1. State Fire Insurance Commissioner Marvin Hall said the credit yields an estimated $2,697 saving for Shiner policyholders based on 1942 premium payments. The credit rewards low five year losses, not the city key rate, and Texas leads states with direct rewards for fire prevention. Continued low losses could lower rates further, notably in dwelling risks, since 1936 reductions have saved about ten million dollars annually for Texas policyholders.
