Twentieth Century Club Sits At High School Meeting

The Twentieth Century Club met in regular session at the High School with teachers as hostesses. Roll call listed poems and authors, study of Enoch Arden led by Miss Matilda Hollman, music by Mrs. A. S. Thulemeyer, and a closing ice cream cake treat after a brief business meeting. Attendance reached 24 present, one member absent, with Mrs. Earl Fry visiting.

Seven Dissenters in Ship Purchase Bill Names

The seven dissenting Democrats aligning with Republicans on the ship purchase bill are Bankhead of Alabama Camden of Kentucky Clarke of Arkansas Hardwick of Georgia Hitchcock of Nebraska O Gorman of New York and Vardaman of Mississippi. Bankhead Clarke Camden Hardwick and Vardaman have Democratic allies from their states supporting the bill. Hitchcock has a Democratic colleague, Norris of Nebraska, while O Gorman has no Democratic colleague and acts with Republican Root. Bryan's Commoner.

The Twentieth Century Club Library is now located at the Corner Drug Store and plans regular hours for members and readers. Details on opening times and access are posted at the new site.

Colonial Tea Hosts by Methodist Ladies Aid

The Ladies Aid of the Methodist church held a Colonial Tea at the Welhausen home, charging 10 cents with receipts of 15 dollars. A large crowd attended. League members assisted with lunch, wearing patriotic aprons. Impromptu songs entertained, and a $25 gift to society funds was deposited by Mr. and Mrs. Wolters.

Pleasant Hosted Party Sparks Festive Evening

Mr and Mrs Edwin Wolters entertained young marrieds with lively music, light, and laughter Tuesday night. Mrs Victor Wolters won a prize as guests enjoyed sandwiches hot chocolate and cake. The gathering included multiple couples and single guests, with cheerful remarks on hospitality. The Children's Mask Ball at the opera house on Feb 20 drew many in costumes and featured a grand march led by local organizers and funded by door receipts totaling 32.75 for the Civic League.

Barn and Contents Destroyed by Fire at Hochheim

At Hochheim last Sunday night the barn and contents belonging to Val Bennett were destroyed by fire. The barn was insured for 175 dollars, with contents including farming implements two buggies harness 500 bushels of corn and other feedstuffs lost. Dr John Blackwell used part of the barn as a garage for his automobile valued at 1350 dollars and uninsured. Origin of fire unknown. Yoakum Times.

Lockhart Marshal Killed in Texas Shooting

In Lockhart Texas on February 19 City Marshal John L Smith was shot and killed by Sheriff J H Franks near the sheriff s office at the courthouse. Franks surrendered and was granted a $3000 bond after an examining trial attended by District Attorney Sam Lowery. Smith had served as city marshal for years and was a former deputy under Franks.

School Notes Program Brightens Friday Morning

A program at 8:30 Friday by Miss Natalie Brautwein’s room featured piano pieces Echo Waltz and Etta’s Waltz, solos Long and Vesper Chimes, Reading Story of Diogenes, patriotic drill, a piano trio, and a group song America for Me with students including Isabel Daniel, Johnny Ponton, Cora Berckenhoff, and Herbert Zappe among others. Visitors listed include D. C. Daniels, O. C. Dittmar, and many others.
