National Conference of Christians and Jews promotes Brotherhood Week from February 20 to 27 to advance justice democracy understanding and goodwill. The message cites equality rights and a weekly effort to eradicate prejudice and foster social justice across America and beyond.
Final rites for Mrs Minnie Lea Newberry wife of the late J C Newberry were held Monday at 3 pm from the First Baptist church. The Rev E P Cummings and Rev Claude F O Neall presided with interment in the Masonic cemetery. Seydler Funeral home arranged services. Mrs Newberry died in the

Mrs. Planck of Gonzales born September 1 1883 died in San Antonio at 5 30 p m Saturday after several weeks illness. She was buried in Gonzales with survivors including Albert Planck of Galveston and nieces in Oklahoma City Pleasanton Hendersonville San Antonio and Shiner. She was a member of First Baptist Church and United Daughters of the Confederacy.
World Prayer Day will be observed at United Dr Martin Luther Church at 7 30 p m Friday February 25 The service brings together women from Lutheran Baptist and Methodist churches in a program of silent meditation music hymns readings and prayers The 1955 theme Abide in Me John 15 4 and the offering supports Foreign and Home Missions across the globe from sunrise in the Tonga Islands to Alaska’s St Lawrence Island.
Shiner High School P T A sponsors a pancake supper at the new high school cafeteria on Thursday March 3. Doors open 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. All you can eat pancakes sausage syrup coffee or milk. Admission 60 cents and 30 cents.
The American Legion National Commander Seaborn Collins plans a March 8 visit in Shiner Texas at Legion Park with TV coverage by Jamieson Film Co and Humble Oil Texas In Review. Tickets for the barbecue must be bought by March 1 from Edgar Kram or the Post Cafe.
Anna J Wendel Olsen 71 widow of Henry F Olsen died at her Corpus Christi residence on February 7 after a long illness She was born in Columbus Texas on November 21 1883 married in Shiner August 8 1906 survived by four daughters and six sons with 11 grandchildren and other relatives Funeral services were held at St Joseph Catholic church with interment in St Joseph Cemetery.Prayers were said at Walker Funeral Home chapel and pallbearers included Henry Olsen John Olsen Frank Weigelt and others
A 53 year old man, Harry Renken of near Shiner, died after a head on collision with Victor R Prasek of Route 1 Moulton at 5 20 p m two miles north of Shiner on State Highway 95. Prasek was seriously injured and both cars were totaled. A second wreck on U S Highway 90 A between Shiner and Hallettsville at 3 10 p m injured Franklin D Stary Hall ettsville and John Sharp 3 0 - full details unclear due to damaged text.
Tragic death of Harry Richard Renken follows a February 19 auto accident. Funeral services were held at Buffington Funeral Home and United Lutheran Church in Shiner with burial in Shiner City Cemetery. Renken, born September 1, 1901, leaves a wife Lillie Klaus Renken, two daughters and three sons, plus siblings and grandchildren.
Frank Maly age 80 died February 14 1955 at 2914 Ellis Fort Worth after seven years of ill health. Born in Czechoslovakia he came to the United States at 17 and farmed near Shiner before retiring. Survivors include son Bohus Maly of Keller eight daughters and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Rosary was said at Shannon Chapel and Requiem Mass held at St Thomas Catholic Church. Burial at Mount Olivet. His wife Mary Muska Mary and an infant daughter had predeceased him.

The County Committee permits turning under winter peas and Melilotus Indica sweet clover at any time. Hutham Clover must remain on the land until April 15, 1955. The approval last Fall required keeping cover crops until seed forms, hence the April 15 deadline per Fred Henneke, chairman.
Mrs. Joe Schacherl aged 79 1 22 died Feb 21 at her Midway home after a farming family life. Survived by husband Joe and 4 daughters 5 sons 15 grandchildren 2 great grandchildren 4 sisters 5 brothers with services in Shiner Catholic Church Requiem Mass led by Rev Edward J Jansky. Burial followed in Shiner Catholic Cemetery with pallbearers named.
