A gunman fired a stream of bullets into the party of President elect Roosevelt last night wounding Mayor Anton Cermak of Chicago and four others but Roosevelt was unhurt. A man named Joe Zangara of New York was held as the shooter.
Giuseppe Zangara received 80 years in prison for the February 15 attack on President elect Roosevelt and three others. He drew 20 years on each of four counts, with maximums for attempted murder. May still face murder charges. Mayor Cermak and Mrs. Joe Gill remain hospitalized in Miami.
Miama Florida February 22 The condition of Mayor Anton Cermak of Chicago shot by Giuseppe Zangara in the attempt to assassinate President-elect Franklin D Roosevelt became a matter of concern to his physicians Tuesday night The physicians visited the mayor s room three times within 45 minutes They report him resting badly because of colitis His temperature was 101 degrees and the pulse rate had increased to 108 with respiration at 30.
Weather permitting Charlottenburg sub county meet will be held Sunday afternoon March 5 with fallback to March 12 if bad weather. Schools are urged to participate and arrange with A E Tampkre. Main events include track and field, volleyball, playground baseball, and evening declamations if others join.

Washington February 20 The House approved repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment by 289 to 121. The action returns the prohibition issue to the States for ratification or rejection. Presidential approval not required for submitting the proposed amendment to the states, but three fourths of the States must ratify.

At the February 16 meeting the Twentieth Century Club scheduled its annual party for February 28 at 7 45 p m. With no business to transact the group enjoyed a program titled The Great Southwest featuring Missions of the Southwest by Mrs Joe Hughs Grand Canyon of Colorado by Mrs Edgar Wolters Carlsbad Cavern by Mrs S A Thulemeyer Enchanted Mesa New Mexico by Mrs Wm Wendtland Jr The Carlsbad Cavern slides by Mrs Thulemeyer entertained and educated.

Immanuel Lutheran Church invites all to a Sunday divine service in English at 10 30 A M on February 26 led by Pastor A Bohot. The notice extends a cordial invitation to the community.
City tax records show J M Canon sues for 411 poll tax receipts at end of January 31 1983. On the same date 1931 he issued 451. City tax collections to date total 9801 dollars 69 cents and school tax collections 10857 dollars 50 cents. Delinquent city taxes 1108 dollars 75 cents and delinquent school taxes 1552 dollars 87 cents.
State Fire Insurance Commission records show Shiner’s fire loss ratio at .185 for 1930 1981 and 1982. The good fire record earns a 15 percent credit, the maximum allowed, which Shiner has received for the past decade.
Farewell to Arms presented Sunday and Monday with Helen Hayes and Gary Cooper, at the Palace Theatre, capturing the novel’s vigor and humane frankness on stage.
Mr and Mrs William Albrecht visited in the home of Fred C Krause on Sunday along with Miss Sophia Krause and her mother from Flatonia.

Mrs Lena Rupert and daughter Edna of Brenham spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs Rudie Valenta and family.
After Mrs. Frank Hodanek was removed home from the local hospital last week she became very ill with pleuresy and Mrs. King Kennon was engaged as special nurse. Her daughter Mrs. Philip Rothschmitt of Haletsville arrived Tuesday to be at her bedside.
The United Dr. Martin Lutheran Church at Shiner says goodbye to Rev. Pfenninger and his family after ten years of service. The congregation lauds his diligence and spiritual leadership, noting growing membership and community outreach. The Pfenningers depart for the Magic Valley, wished prosperity, peace, and happiness in their new home.
Mrs Corbett McElroy hosted the quiet ceremony in Houston with James H. Taylor Jr. of Bede as groom. Rev J F Kidd officiated at 8 p m with Miss Marie Mikeska and Bert Henderson as witnesses. The couple plans to reside in Bebe where Taylor works in the family mercantile business.
The Shiner High School program last Friday night pleased all with full school representation from tiny tots to the Senior Class. A strong crowd attended and showed appreciation. Receipts totaled 25 dollars with admission set at 10 and 5 cents.
Mr. Peck Welhausen has been named local chairman of the farmers seed loan committee in Lavaca County and will handle all government loan applications from farmers in the community. Last year no applications were filed, highlighting the strong farming in the area. Farmers needing to borrow to plant should see Welhausen for loan details.
The Farmers Gin directors met Monday February 20 at the gin office and elected officers: John H. Elsik president John Bohman vice president and Henry F. Ehlers secretary treasurer. Anton Hodanek was reemployed for the tenth consecutive year as manager of the local plant.
Last Friday night a social and bridal shower honored the newlyweds Mr and Mrs Anton Stach. Miss Lillian Fehrenkamp and Miss Emily Bozka organized the event at the Bozka home where guests presented many gifts. Mrs Frank Stach Sr and Miss Louise served coffee and sandwiches.
Relatives from far flung locations gathered for the funeral of Mrs G A Pannewitz. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Paul Tauch and Mrs Emma Hasenibrock from Filatonia. Also present were Mr and Mrs Henry Tauch and son of Galveston, Mr and Mrs Wm Tauch and son of San Antonio, and numerous Bielefield and Tauch families from Falls City Schulenburg Robstown Sugar Land and Sugarland area.
Miss Ella Stratman will repeat the play Wild Ginger Friday night February 24 in the City Auditorium. Pupils of St. Ludmila's Academy participate. The hour is 7 45 p m. Admission adults 25 cents and school children 10 cents.
