Attempt to assassinate Roosevelt in Miami hits mayor and others

A gunman fired a stream of bullets into the party of President elect Roosevelt last night wounding Mayor Anton Cermak of Chicago and four others but Roosevelt was unhurt. A man named Joe Zangara of New York was held as the shooter.

Zangara Sentenced In Roosevelts Attack Case

Giuseppe Zangara received 80 years in prison for the February 15 attack on President elect Roosevelt and three others. He drew 20 years on each of four counts, with maximums for attempted murder. May still face murder charges. Mayor Cermak and Mrs. Joe Gill remain hospitalized in Miami.

Miama Florida February 22 The condition of Mayor Anton Cermak of Chicago shot by Giuseppe Zangara in the attempt to assassinate President-elect Franklin D Roosevelt became a matter of concern to his physicians Tuesday night The physicians visited the mayor s room three times within 45 minutes They report him resting badly because of colitis His temperature was 101 degrees and the pulse rate had increased to 108 with respiration at 30.

House Passes Repeal With Heavy Vote

Washington February 20 The House approved repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment by 289 to 121. The action returns the prohibition issue to the States for ratification or rejection. Presidential approval not required for submitting the proposed amendment to the states, but three fourths of the States must ratify.

Shiner High School Program Pleases Audience

The Shiner High School program last Friday night pleased all with full school representation from tiny tots to the Senior Class. A strong crowd attended and showed appreciation. Receipts totaled 25 dollars with admission set at 10 and 5 cents.
