Notice to Business Men And Post Office Patrons

Washington's birthday is a legal holiday for all post office employees. This year the holiday falls on Saturday, and the notice calls attention that the post office closes Friday at 6 p.m. and reopens Monday at 8:30 a.m. Mail will be received, distributed and dispatched. For stamps and supplies, secure Friday. If mailing parcels, try to get them in Friday. Hugh G. Koether, Postmaster.

First Civil Service Exam Held in Shiner High School

Saturday morning from 9 to 12 the Clerk Carrier Examination was held in the High School building. Alfred A. Schramm conducted the exam assisted by Elvin Koether. Twelve parties took the exam, seven from Shiner, with Victoria Ingleside Giddings Port Lavaca and San Antonio represented. No ladies entered the class.

Death Claims Mrs Ernst G Stratmann in Yorktown

Funeral services for Mrs Ernst G Stratmann were held in Yorktown after her death on Sunday evening. Born August Stulken in Lavaca County in 1883 she married Ernst G Stratmann in 1905 and lived on a Garfield area farm in DeWitt County. Survived by husband and children Selma Turk Paul Bruno Edgar Ernst plus her mother and many siblings. She was 46 years old.

Remembering John Novosad and Family Ties

John Novosad died after a long illness at his home near Shiner on February 13 at 11 am. Born October 29, 1871 in Checho Slovakia, he moved to the United States at age 15, married Barbara Kolafa in 1900 and had eleven children. He later married Francis Matiasek in 1919, fathering three more sons. Funeral services were conducted at the family home by Father Netardus, with burial in Moulton Catholic Cemetery attended by Father Kopp. The Gazette extends sympathy to the bereaved.

Tuesday Bridge Club Hosts Enjoyable Evening

Mrs Benno Holchak hosted last week with members and guests. George Washington motif decor pleased attendees. Mrs O W Dreyer led the club with high score, Mrs Hugh Koether won high guest prize, and Mrs Alvina Wolters took consolation. A salad course and hot coffee followed.

Gonzales Veteran Dies at 103 in County Home

Henry L. Qualls, 103, Confederate veteran and Gonzales County’s oldest resident, died at his family home in Gonzales. He was reportedly the state’s oldest Mason. He is survived by three children.

The Post Office holiday on Washington's Birthday does not apply to local shops. The Chamber of Commerce previously set closing days, but February 22 is not one of them. All business houses will be open Saturday and the public was asked to note this.

Highway Bridges Near Completion

A visiting scribbler observed the Boggy Highway bridge receive the last concrete pour. Railings will be finished this week with delivery in about 10 days. County inspector Ed Miller noted uncertainty on opening to traffic. foreman Chas Longoria gave the timeline. The Rocky bridge work connects grade and is likely to open this week. Heavy January weather caused delays. otherwise both spans would be in use now.

P T Association Plans Pie Sale After Dues Collected

The Parent-Teacher Association met Thursday afternoon with Mrs. Ed gar Wolters presiding. Secretary Mrs. Lillie Muecke kept minutes and annual dues. Treasurer A L Val ek reported a bank balance over two hundred dollars after bills from prior meeting. The paper campaign committee said many old magazines and newspapers were gathered. Miss Reischel received fifteen dollars to buy toy orchestra instruments and music for pupils. The group voted to hold a pie sale Friday the 21st during the afternoon recess, with members donating the pies.
