Notes recall the 50th anniversary of the Public School P T A in Shiner with a 1910 clipping. The Mothers Club of Shiner elected officers and reported a year of receipts totaling 160.95 with expenses 155.55 and a 5.40 bank balance.
Knights of Columbus will hold a regular meeting Thursday February 19 at 7 30 p m in the Catholic Parish Gym. Members are reminded of alphabet attendance and to be there.
The First National Bank of Shiner will be closed Monday February 23 in observance of Washington's Birthday which falls on Sunday February 22.
A free movie on fertilizer will be shown at the Shiner American Legion Hall on Thursday February 26 at 7 30 p m sponsored by the Red Star Fertilizer Division. Coffee and doughnuts will be served after the show. The program is presented by the Shiner Farmers Coop Moulton Farmers Coop and Vrana Gin and Feed Mill. All farmers and anyone interested are invited to attend.
The Farm Bureau Livestock Committee and Extension Program Building Committee announce meetings with C Y Jacobs Cecil Williams J P Harbich and Ernest Chaloupka to brief Lavaca County livestock men on a proposed state bill to eradicate brucellosis county wide. Veterinarians will discuss local brucellosis issues and control measures.
More than a hundred Cub Packs Scout Troops and Explorer Posts in the 15 County Capitol Area Council join the Council's Scout-O-Rama set for March 2021 at the new Municipal Auditorium in Austin. Scout units from Shiner include Boy Scout Troop 232 led by Scoutmaster Dr A A Darilek Jr presenting Printing.
The Shiner Gazette lists office hours for the week. Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 12:00 and 1:00 to 5:30, Saturday 8:00 to 12:00, with Saturday afternoons closed.
L F Billimek 75 a noted farmer and bank official died February 10 1959 at Mercy Hospital Jourdanton from a heart ailment. He lived in Poth 59 years and was vice president and director of First National Bank of Poth. Funeral services were at St Johns Lutheran Church Poth with burial in St Johns Cemetery. Survivors include his widow two daughters a son two sisters and three brothers.
The Shiner Sheller and Feed Store and the Henkhaus Gin and Feed Store sponsor a Mathieson meeting on Thursday February 19 at 7 30 p.m. at the American Legion Hall Shiner. Dewey Compton Radio Station KTRH agriculture announcer is expected. The program includes films on fertilizer for corn and cotton insect controls. Door prizes will be given. Free admission invites all farmers in the area.
The regular meeting of the public school P TA celebrates its fiftieth Founder's Day year with President Mrs. E W Stratman presiding. Supt Norman Davis led the opening prayer and minutes were read. Donations to the memorial library fund were noted and plans for a memorial card were proposed. A report highlighted the P TA’s fifty years of service and a group photo of past presidents was taken.
A verdict of self inflicted shotgun wound in the head was returned in Yoakum on February 16 in the death of Henry August Kutac fifty railroad man of Yoakum He left a farewell note for his wife Pearl Kutac Funeral services were held at Buffington Funeral Home and St Josephs Catholic Church with burial in Catholic Cemetery He is survived by his wife five children two brothers five sisters and a set of parents with prior relatives noted including several deceased.
D. H. Hughs 78 dies Sunday in Peterson Memorial Hospital Kerrville. Funeral Tuesday at Presbyterian Church with Rev Richard Ryan officiating. interment Glen Rest Cemetery. Survived by wife Bessie, daughter Mrs Lon Smart Jr, granddaughter Portia Smart, sister Mrs J H Vanham. another daughter Portia Hughs predeceased. Relatives from Moulton and Shiner attend.
March 1 marks the cutoff for paying Dance Club dues with several members overdue. The note urges delinquent members to contact the secretary or treasurer if not renewing so new members can be admitted, and announces that next week will be Last Call for dues.
The president offered the closing prayer followed by a social hour and refreshments that attendees found enjoyable.
William E Bridges 31 of Cuero will headline the Yoakum Chamber of Commerce banquet on Tuesday February 24. Bridges toured behind the Iron Curtain with 22 editors and industrialists visiting Moscow Leningrad Kiev and Kharkov. He is executive secretary of the Associated Plumbing and Heating Contractors of Texas and a U S Army Intelligence Reserve officer. He edits the association magazine and will show picture slides during his Yoakum talk. Tickets are on sale at the Chamber office or Yoakum banks.
A crane boom collapsed at a Riverside High School construction site on Austin's east side killing Charley Haywood of Bastrop Sam Stewart Smith and A J Dusty Stewart of Austin. The John M Border Steel and Electric Co crane was lifting concrete when the accident occurred.
The Moulton area mourns Paul Flessner who died at Renger Hospital Hallettsville at age 52 years 10 months 7 days. He was born March 29 1906 in Green School area. He married Julia Gebauer in 1925 and had five children Allen Beatrice Patricia Paul A Gene Wayne. He farmed near Moulton and is survived by wife mother five grandchildren and siblings. Pallbearers were Gebauer family members and local men. Funeral services held February 7 at Smith Funeral Home with burial in Moulton Catholic Cemetery. Rev Bernard Goebel officiated.
The J. M. Canon family learned Monday night of the sudden death of Sam Stewart Smith in Austin where he worked as a cement finisher on a school building. Funeral services were set for Thursday at Rockwood near Brady. He leaves his wife and two children, Stephen seven and Jan five, plus his parents and siblings. More details in the next issue.
William D Blunk executive director of UTs 75th year observance will address the Lavaca DeWitt Texas Ex Club banquet on March 2 at Swank Restaurant. He will discuss UTs 1983 outlook and long range plans and preview the 75th anniversary year. Tickets cost 150 per person and are available from Mrs Robert Wagner.

The Shiner Quarterback Club hosts Yoakum at the Shiner Public School Gym on Thursday February 26. Tip off is 7 45 p m with local supporters urged to attend.

Kevin Eugene Laqua born February 12 at Spring Branch Hospital in Houston weighs 7 pounds 14 ounces to Eugene Laqua and Angeline Tesar, with grandparents Joe and Angeline Tesar and Emil Laqua. Bryan Nolen, son of Daniel and Virginia Hirsch, weighing 8 pounds 9 ounces, born February 6 in Victoria, welcomed by sister and Hirsch and Nolen grandparents. A baby boy weighing 9 pounds 12 ounces born February 15 to Martin Boedeker and wife in Shiner at Wagner Hospital. A baby girl weighing 7 pounds 10 ounces born February 13 to Otto Moeller and wife in Wagner Hospital. An eight pound one ounce girl born February 14 to John Stasny Jr. and wife in Wagner Hospital, welcomed by five sisters.
