In recent Chamber of Commerce and Business Men's Club meetings, the town decided to keep six closing days. New Year’s Day Easter Monday July 4 Armistice Day Thanksgiving and Christmas will close. Good Friday from noon to 3 pm remains observed.
Charles W. Kram, a 23 year old seminary student stricken last June, will leave Robert B. Green Hospital for Gonzales polio center. Despite paralysis he plans to start a ham radio station and hopes to stay connected with Texas amateurs.
Legion District Convention planned for Shiner in April with Commander Sterling approving a new kitchen for Legion Park. R Paul Martin praised progress while Polio Fund Drive reports show $300 raised from January events including door offerings and candy sales. Auxiliary thanks donors and supporters. stew meal followed adjournment as program planning continued.
Last week a aerial photo was identified as the farm of Mr and Mrs Frank Novak located three miles south of Shiner on Route 2 Yoakum. The 70 acre farm has 55 acres cultivated for cotton corn and feedstuffs with 15 acres of pasture. The Novak family resides there with cows hens hogs turkeys and ducks and a large year round garden. The Novak home was modernized and improvements include rebuilding the cowshed and garage. The Novak family attends Shiner Catholic Church and participates in KJT KJZT societies. Seven grandchildren complete the family details and several neighbors correctly identified the property this week earning free passes to the Palace Theatre.
Sympathy pours in for Dr J V Connolly at the death of his grandmother Mrs Angeline V Decker age 92 a New York native Funeral services were held in Washington DC Friday February 13 Dr Connolly flew from San Antonio to join his mother and siblings for the rites and returned home early Sunday morning
Parish PT A invites all to a Sunday February 22 game party at the Catholic Parish Gym starting 4:00 PM. Ticketed meal offers chicken noodle soup sandwiches cokes and kolaches with proceeds aiding the Church Repair Fund.
Mrs. Ada Caroline Wiedemann Luck, longtime Shiner resident and widow of Ferd P. Luck, died after a heart attack in Victoria. Funeral services were conducted at the Roeder Funeral Home in Shiner with burial in Shiner City Cemetery. She was born January 8, 1874 near Flatonia and married December 15, 1895. Surviving relatives include daughter Thelma Roth of Victoria and three grandchildren. The service featured hymns and references to her faith.
Shiner and area members celebrate a Polio Fund drive lead with Dr. John V. Connolly reporting a $4,275.89 contribution for Lavaca County. A separate tragedy recalls Ernest Beiersdorfer a two war veteran killed in a Feb 8 traffic accident near Weimar. Funeral services were held Feb 10 and Lavaca County totals aim to top $12,000.
