Lavaca county farmers were urged to plant more peanuts while applying conservation practices. O E Hermes, county USDA war board chairman, cited wartime shipping cuts and the need to reduce fats and oils use. He advised contour farming, high phosphate fertilizers, barnyard manure, protecting residue, and protecting drainageways to curb erosion. He suggested winter cover crops or alternate contour strips as erosion safeguards and to rotate strips periodically.
