A civic note argues parents and schools fail to teach courtesy and respect for others. It urges a simple rule for all ages to stop harm to people and property, then discusses gasoline tax history and opposes further boosts as road funding may be diverted elsewhere.
Ex-students from Lavaca DeWitt and Gonzales counties will meet at Starys Cafe in Yoakum on Monday night March 1 at 7 30 p m to honor their school. Franklin W Denius of Austin will speak as President of The Ex-Students Association. Reservations due by February 25.
Lavaca County Sheriff Ronnie Dodds details a busy January with 19 prisoners processed, $1011.25 in fines collected, and daily patrols, drunk arrests, DWI cases, burglary checks, and juvenile monitoring across Yoakum Shiner Hallettsville Moulton Sublime Waelder Ezzell Laredo Shiner. He notes remodeling and moving into the jail and ongoing office setup duties.
Rotary in Shiner marks its 60th anniversary with a program led by Ray Welhausen. Rev. R A Tindall notes world wide celebration by over 11 800 clubs and 560 000 Rotarians in 127 countries.
First Lieutenant and Mrs Olin Strauss and family arrived in Hallettsville from Virginia where Lt Strauss attended a Judge Advocate School at the University of Virginia. After a 15 day leave he will report to Fort Hood on March 1. He is the son of County Judge and Mrs Gus Strauss.
Shiner groups announce meetings and events all week including the Home Demonstration Club at 7 30 p m February 18, Knights of Columbus Parish Gym gathering February 18, and a Firemen's Auxiliary first meeting of 1965 February 23. Owners urged to attend and dues reminders issued.
Funeral services were held in Yoakum on Monday February 8 1965 for Ronda Parr age 16 days daughter of Mr and Mrs O J Parr of 125 Hutchinson Yoakum Rev D I Dalton officiated at Buffington Chapel Yoakum and Hillside Cemetery Cuero The infant died on arrival at Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio February 6 at 245 p.m Surviving are parents a sister Beverly Ann Parr brother Jimmy Wayne Parr and grandparents Mr and Mrs Frank Huebner of Yoakum and Leonard Parr of Cuero.
Miss Beatrice Zappe, who had surgery at DeTar Hospital Victoria last Wednesday, is recovering at home. Her mother Mrs. William Zappe stayed with her at Victoria and resided with her brother W. A. Huebner and Mrs. Huebner. Also present were her brothers Wm. Zappe Jr. of Gonzales and Dr. H. Arthur Zappe of Mineral Wells.
Tickets priced at 2.00 per person for a dinner meeting. Door prizes and stories about January 1 and events in Miami are expected to add an orange color to the affair.
Ludvik J Svetlik Jr of Hallettsville was buried February 13 after services at Kaben a Funeral Home and Sacred Heart Church. Pallbearers included Victor Svetlik Jr, Dan Grones, and others. he died of a heart attack February 11 at 5 30 p.m. He was 47, survived by wife Annie and five sons and two daughters. He was active in Sacred Heart Church Knights of Columbus VFW American Legion and Appells Hill Gun Club. A line of rosaries was held by K of C the parish and the CDA.
Mrs. A J Blohm age 85 years six months and 21 days died Monday February 15 1965 at 1130 a m at Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital The body lay in state at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner until 1:00 p m Wednesday February 17 then to First Methodist Church for services at 200 p m Interment followed at Shiner City Cemetery A complete obituary to be published next week.
Sunday morning's clear start gave way to rainfall across Shiner with Edgar Pfeil reporting 3.10 inches from Monday night to Wednesday morning. The Shiner Comanche Band opens its 1965 season with a concert Thursday at 8:00 p.m. in the High School Gym. Tickets cost adults fifty cents and children twenty-five. proceeds fund band equipment. The 56‑member group placed second in Gonzales Come And Take It Day Parade and earned Honorable Mention in the Fatstock Parade in San Antonio.
The Shiner Post Office will be closed Monday February 22 in observance of Washington's Birthday. No rural delivery on that day. The First National Bank in Shiner will also be closed all day Monday February 22 in observance of Washington's Birthday.
John J Stary Yoakum rancher and ex owner of Starys Restaurant died in a Galveston hospital February 12 1965 after a lingering illness He was 61 born July 10 1903 in Yoakum survived by wife Adella a son Ed five sisters two brothers and two grandchildren Funeral services were set for February 14 at 2 00 p m at Buffington Chapel St Josephs Church and Cemetery Requiem Mass was offered February 15 at 7 45 a m Rosary was recited February 12 at 7 30 p m at the chapel.
The obituary for E O Jack Henkhaus recalls his service as a WWI veteran and civic worker. He belonged to Knights of Columbus Holy Name Society Fire Department Herman Sons and was a charter member of Shiner American Legion Post. Military rites were held at the cemetery and the flag presented to his widow. He worked as a public weigher in Seguin after starting in Shiner.

The Shiner Independent School District proposes to integrate first and second grades of the Negro elementary school in 1965 66 and add one grade per year, completing integration in about six years. Board cites Civil Rights Act requirements and aims to avoid overcrowding while ensuring equal access to federal programs.
The Shiner Independent School District will hold an election on April 3 1965 to fill three board seats. Candidates must file with the superintendent by March 4 in writing using provided forms. Spoetzl Brewery of Shiner Texas earned two top safety awards at the U S Brewers Association convention in San Francisco California The winning categories included a safe driving record in delivery and the all personnel category The recognition came during the association's 1965 annual convention February 7 to 10 at the Fairmont Hotel with about 650 brewers and members attending
Navy recruiter Chief Petty Officer B F Johnson announced a 120 day delay program for enlistment. Qualified youths may join while in school or employed and report for active duty up to four months later, with delay counting toward obligation and aiding draft exemption. Shiner Dance Club members are urged to pay their dues six dollars at the First National Bank in Shiner. The deadline is February 28, after which dues will not be accepted.
St Pauls High School will host a girls basketball tournament for Catholic schools on Sunday February 21 in the Catholic Parish Gym. Games start 1 PM and run to about 7 PM with Sacred Heart Hallettsville Bishop Forest Schulenburg Nazareth Victoria St Paul competing for two trophies.
