Dickson Foundation Gives 335 Acres to Area Scouts

Alton C. Allen presented a deed for 335 acres six miles northwest of Shiner in Gonzales County to Russell Fish for Capitol Area Council Boy Scouts of America. The land will serve as a basic camping area for scouts across 15 counties in South Central Texas. The gift, announced February 9 1966 at the Villa Capri Banquet in Austin, honors the Raymond Dickson Foundation’s charitable goals.

Little Becky Ann Cook Receives Hat From Rex Allen

Becky Ann Cook daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Cook was given a hat by Rex Allen during the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo Sunday afternoon. Allen the star of the show kissed her after greeting fans and presented his own hat worn during the matinee. Becky Ann treasured the souvenir as a prized memory.

Post Office and Bank Closed on Washington's Birthday

The Shiner Post Office will be closed Tuesday February 22 in observance of Washington's Birthday with no rural delivery that day. The First National Bank in Shiner will also be closed all day Tuesday February 22 in observance of Washington's Birthday.

Shiner Comanche Band Spring Concert At School Gym

The Shiner Comanche Band will hold a spring concert on February 22 at 7 30 p m in the Shiner High School Gym with a free will donation to fund new instruments. Everyone is cordially invited. In other news Mrs Frances Strauss of Hallettsville broke her right arm in two places last Saturday while in town. she is head supervisor at Sacred Heart School lunchroom.

St Paul High Sets Sixth Annual Science Fair Date

St Paul High School will hold its sixth annual Science Fair in the Catholic Parish Gym on Sunday March 6 1966 with exhibits set up March 5. Students present projects under National Science Fair rules for judges on March 5 and the public may visit the displays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Miss Frances Pokluda Laid To Final Rest

Funeral services for Miss Frances Pokluda of Corpus Christi were held at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner and Saint Boniface Church. Burial followed at Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Survivors include Ludvik Pokluda and five brothers plus three sisters. The family mourns in a shadowy way.

World Day of Prayer Observed by Shiner Churches

The 79th World Day of Prayer unites six continents and 125 nations for a prayer service for peace and Christian unity. The Shiner Methodist and Lutheran Churches invite all to attend at First Methodist Church on Friday February 25 at 7 30 p.m. A nursery is provided.

Mrs. John Chumchal age 77 died February 9 1966 at Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital Funeral rites were held at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner and at Shiner Catholic Church Requiem Mass with Rev Father Charles Carolan officiating Burial was in Shiner Catholic Cemetery Rosary led by Rev Father John J Hanacek Pallbearers included grandsons Victor Chumchal Yoakum Bobbie Peterek Gonzales Milton Leonard Ronnie Chumchal Adolph Schaefer All of Shiner She was born Christina Slovacek May 15 1888 Ellinger Fayette County Texas married John Chumchal October 23 1905 They lived on farms near Shiner and Kokernot Later settled on Green School property Survived by eight sons and five daughters with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. several siblings noted. The obituary notes two sons and others predeceased and ends with a reflection on memories of her unselfish traits.

Mrs. Felix Berckenhoff 83, of Shiner, died February 15 1966 in Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital at 11 20 p m. Requiem Mass at Shiner Catholic Church followed by burial in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Buffington Chapel services and parishioners observed. Complete obituary next week.

Noodle Soup Dinner at Parish Gym Sunday

The KJZT No. 5 and KJT No. 10 and 20 sponsor a chicken noodle soup dinner at the Catholic Parish Gym on Sunday February 27 starting 11:00 a.m. Chicken salad sandwiches boiled chicken kolaches cakes pies and strudel will also be available. Absentee voting for school trustee election opens March 14 and runs to March 29 or four days before the April 2 election. Clerk for absentee voting is Mrs. Lanelle Kasper. Supplies and ballots are in the Shiner Public Schools office. Voters must show a poll tax receipt to establish eligibility.
