Four Yoakumites Injured in Head On Wreck

Four Yoakum men R C Garbade Bill Henkhaus A O Frobese and Tim Cook plus a Luling driver were injured in a head on collision on the Gonzales Luling highway near the Corners around 1 am Sunday. Tim Cook most seriously hurt with head and body injuries. all treated and released except Cook and the Luling driver.

Death of Rudolph Chumchal Sr. of Dilworth noted

Relatives mourn the passing of Rudolph Chumchal Sr. born August 24, 1886 in Sweet Home Lavaca County. He died February 9 at Yoakum Hospital after living in Gonzales and Dilworth areas. Survived by widow Carrie Roznovsky and seven children, three grandchildren, siblings, half siblings, and stepfather Joe Petru. Funeral Mass at Shiner Catholic Church with burial in local Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers named. large attendance and floral tributes.

Shiner Lassies Close Season With Big Win Over Moulton

The Shiner high school girls basketball team finished the season with a 34 to 18 victory over Moulton in Yoakum. Star scorers Beth Howard Stella Novak and Frances Broz led a strong forward attack while guards Ruby Fisseler Pearl Stoeltje and Veronica Baca slowed Moulton. Six seniors graduate from a 17-player squad, leaving 11 veterans to build next year, and county championship claims are boosted by the win.

At the regular meeting Thursday night the Business Men's Club served a delicious chicken plate to eighteen members and guests. Mrs. Fred Fietsam and Mr. Alfred Brosch received the club salute for their attendance. President Novak’s illness was noted with regret. Holchak presided as vice president. Mayor Richter reported no donations yet to the community chest fund. L. E. Denmark discussed Highway No. 200 extension from Hallettsville to Wharton and outlook for construction. Attendees favored visiting Austin Tuesday night to join statewide protest over the truck load limit law.

Shiner Girls Have Impressive Record This Season

Shiner High School girls basketball posted a strong three year run with 46 wins and 3 losses in 49 games. They defeated teams such as St Josephs and Waelder while narrowly losing to Tex Lutheran College and Moulton this year, edging past several opponents and contributing to a total score of 1431 to 851. The report notes the boys team, led by Mr Jowers, has 95 wins and 7 losses, with two district titles and a reputation for competitive battles.

February roll call boosts K. C. B. meeting turnout

A large turnout of TV members answered the February roll call. The social event was a great success with attendees anticipating a larger and grander meet next month. All members are urged to attend, per the reporter.

High School PTA Meets in Regular Session

The High School Parent Teacher Association gathered Thursday at 3 30 pm in the school auditorium. Guests included three Shiner High School story tellers: Howard McDonald Doris Ray and Emil L Balusek Jr. The stories impressed attendees. President Mrs Edgar Wolters presided. The next meeting is scheduled for March 9 at 3 30 pm.

District basketball tournament schedule at Lockhart

The district basketball tournament starts Friday February 17 at 3 p m in Lockhart. Garwood meets Smithville at 3 p m Prairie Lea faces Fayetteville at 4 p m Gonzales plays Bellville at 7 p m and Shiner meets Giddings at 8 p m. Winners from the first pair play Saturday at 2 p m and 5 p m for the finals on Saturday night at 7 30 p m.

Mrs Belle Cox Dies in Alice at Yoakum Burial

The Gazette reports the death of Mrs Belle Cox in Alice last night. Funeral arrangements and exact hour will be announced. burial is set for Yoakum. She was the mother of Mrs D C Daniel, a former Shiner resident, and Mrs Daniel is reported ill.

Old Age Assistance Office Adds Monthly Days in Lavaca County

Lavaca County investigator announces extra office days to better serve the public. As of February the Old Age Assistance Commission will hold sessions at Moulton Farmers and Merchants Bank on the first Monday, Shiner City Hall on the second Monday, and Yoakum City Hall on the fourth Monday each month from 8:30 to 12 noon, in addition to the regular third Monday in Hallettsville Court House.

Funeral for Rev. Fellmann Held in Nada

Reverend F. J. Fellmann died February 10 after a lengthy illness. Former pastor of St. John's Moravia, his body arrived from Houston to Nada where it lay in state at St Marys Church before funeral services on Monday. Burial followed in Nada Cemetery. May he rest in peace.
