Snow Sets Winter Wonderland Scene in Shiner Area

Snowclouds sent a white mantle over Shiner on Tuesday night with sleet and flurries across Texas. Snow melted on warm ground at first but persisted enough for a winter scene. Shiner saw a 30 degree low on Wednesday morning.

Named Alternate Naval Academy Nomination for Gilbert Fox

Shiner High School Superintendent Neal B Fox reports to William Gilbert Fox has been named as third alternate for the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis Maryland. Congressman Thompson advised a family doctor physical before March 1958 entrance exams, with further instructions to follow.

Unfinished Task shown at United Dr Martin Luther Church

The film The Unfinished Task a 72 minute Concordia Films production will be shown Sunday February 16 at 7 30 p m in the social hall. The Lutheran League auxiliary sponsors urge attendance praising its heart touching inspirational message and value.

Blessing of Patron Saints Statues at Local Church

After the last Mass on Sunday February 3 Rev. Father John J. Hanacek blessed white Italian marble statues donated by the late Charles Ermis and Mrs. Ermis of Yoakum. The six foot statues, imported from Rome, overlook the church’s portico niches, with a large parish turnout. The gift was gratefully acknowledged as the Catholic community recalls Sts Cyril and Methodius origins and the 1891 wooden church. Observance of the feast of Sts Cyril and Methodius is on July 5.

Joe Vaclavik 77 Buried in Shiner Funeral Held

Funeral services for Joe Vaclavik 77 were held at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner. He died February 6 1958 at his Rt 3 Shiner home. Burial was in SPJST Cemetery Shiner with casket attendants from Shiner Lane City El Campo Louise and Port Lavaca. He was born 1880 in Live Oak community near Hallettsville and married Mary Polasek in 1904. He leaves wife and eleven children.

VFW Auxiliary Food and Bake Sale Saturday February 15

W H Schutte Sr died in San Diego California and remains shipped to Shiner. Funeral services are planned at Buffington Funeral Home on Saturday February 15 at 2 00 PM with burial in Shiner City Cemetery. His wife was the former Annie Hollmann.

Henry V Hajek of Rt 2 Yoakum died February 10 1958 at Wagner Hospital after burns at home from a lit pipe. Funeral at Buffingtons Shiner Church with burial in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Mrs. Carolina Schindler Last Rites Held in Moulton

Funeral services for Mrs. Carolina Schindler were held February 5 1958 at Smith Funeral Home Moulton and at St Josephs Catholic Church with a Requiem Mass. Interment followed in St Josephs Cemetery. She died February 3 in San Antonio aged 86 with survivors including three sons eight grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

Gifted Speaker Dale Francis Headlines Knights of Columbus Banquet

Negligent Homicide Charged Driver After Fatal Crash

County Attorney Leon Pesek filed negligent homicide charges last week against Dean Kersh, driver of the car involved in the February 1 crash that killed Audrey Jean Schroeder of Yorktown and left Charles Schwartz and Janet Dolmseth critically injured. The case, investigated by Constable Bill Renger, places Kersh under bond with trial in County Court within 90 days. max penalty is three years or $3,000 fine or both.

Mrs. Gerhard Heerssen nee Hulda Brieger Sauer died February 8 1958 at 11 45 p m after chest pains and heart failure. Survived by five children from first marriage four from second marriage Otto and Paul Heerssen in Yoakum Texas City, 18 grandchildren 23 great grandchildren and several stepchildren. Weekend crash injures Yorktown woman and two Hallettsville youths

Seriously injured were Miss Loretta Iris Audilet of Yorktown riding in the Schwartz car and two Hallettsville youths Wesley Buena chek and Roger Starling riding with Kersh. Kersh had minor injuries and was driving without a license. Neither car carried liability insurance. Schwartz had a license.
