The Future Homemakers invite the public to attend the Queen's Coronation at S. H. S. Saturday at 8 p.m. The event proceeds regardless of weather. Admission is 15 and 25 cents for the Coronation and program.

Former sheriff A P McElroy was seriously injured at his home on Saturday when his foot became entangled in his horse’s bridle reins. He was dragged about five hundred yards and sustained compound fractures of the left arm and right leg. A Houston bone specialist treated him at Renger Hospital.

Auto License Tags Now On Sale Here

Motorists in Lavaca County began buying 1948 orange and black license tags at the county tax collector’s office and at Shiner Motor Sales. New rules let tags be attached immediately after purchase rather than March 1, and all cars must display tags by April 1. Owners urged to buy early to avoid the rush.

The American Legion Auxiliary will gather at the library on Thursday February 12 at 7 30 p m for a regular meeting with members urged to attend.

The Shiner Rotary Club defeated V. F. W. 53 to 34 Tuesday night at the local gym. Veterans played with four men throughout and struggled to keep pace. Another game will be scheduled later.

UT Austin spring enrollment hits 16 107 students

Austin Texas February 8 University of Texas spring semester registration reaches 16 107 students as of February 8. Registration supervisor H A Calkins notes last year’s figure was 16 238 with 13 776 pre registered before the term. Of those preregistered 8 009 were veterans.

Death of Theo Stuter Ends Quiet Texas Life

Theodore Stuter died February 7 at 9 17 p m after living in Allenton and later Texas for 40 years. Born in Westphalia Germany 1868 he came to America in 1903 and worked in silk weaving before moving to Texas in 1908 to visit his brother Henry Stuter. Funeral services were held Monday at Eschenburg Funeral Parlor with burial in City Cemetery. Surviving brothers Carl Stuter Penn and Henry Shiner, nieces and nephews include Mrs Edwin Wehl Houston Mrs A G Stratman Sweet Home Herman Stuter Houston Emil Crystal City Valentine Philadelphia. Lavaca County Poll Tax Total Reaches 7 325 Voters

Lavaca County reports 7 325 poll tax payments for the 1948 election year. The figure rises from 1939 levels, surpasses the 1930 total of 7 459, but falls short of the 1928 registration of 8 735.

Chamber urged large turnout for Austin meeting on Yoakum Waco line

At Thursday night’s Chamber of Commerce meeting plans were made for the February 12 Austin hearing on abandoning passenger service along the Yoakum Waco line. President Sedlmeyer cited Railroad Commissioner Culberson’s push for broad town participation. A county wide discussion in Hallettsville on February 12 was also discussed, with the chamber to sponsor prize money and ribbons for the F F A Show.

Business Men's Club Plans Evening Meetings on Road Work

Jos Muras local chairman turned in $217.80 to the County Chairman at Hallettsville at the close of the drive Tuesday. No special quota or canvass was made. the amount came from bottles in various business houses.

Joseph Panus Dies and Is Buried in Shiner

Joseph Panus aged 88 of Wied section died Tuesday February 10 at 1 30 a m after three months ill health. He emigrated from Czechoslovakia Dec 27 1859 and settled near Shiner with wife Agnes and four children. Funeral Feb 11 at 8 45 a m Eschenburg Funeral Parlor then Shiner Catholic Church. Burial in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers named. Survived by wife four children 28 grandchildren 21 great grandchildren and three sisters in Czechoslovakia. He was a farmer and devout parishioner.
