General J Watt Page announces third registration for all unregistered males born between February 17 1897 and December 31 1921. Local boards and assistants handle registration in most sections of the state. In Shiner, registration will be at City Hall.
Agnes Cizek aged 82 years and 10 months died Monday morning February 9 at the home of her son Jacob Cizek in Gonzales after a brief illness. She was born February 10 1859 in Czechoslovakia and came to America in 1888. Funeral was held in Gonzales Tuesday at 10 with services at Jacob Cizek's home and burial in Gonzales City Cemetery. Surviving are two sons Joe of Shiner and Jacob of Gonzales and numerous grandchildren. The Gazette extends sympathy.
The United Dr Luther Church announces Sunday School at 10:30 a m and Divine Service at 11:30 a m in German, with English Service at 8 p m plus a Lutheran Men's Club sponsor. Ash Wednesday service at 8 p m German. World Day of Prayer at Baptist Church Feb 20. Rev. Richard Schuetze urges strengthening spiritual defenses and Lent as church open door.
Sunday School at 11 a.m. and Morning Worship at noon for the Methodist Church. Evening Worship at 8 p.m. Rev. Vernon Perry is pastor. Shiner Baptist Church offers Sunday School at 10 a.m. under Thomas Hughs, training union at 6 p.m. led by Mrs. R. B. Harris, preaching at 7 p.m. Midweek prayer on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Rayford Harris is pastor.
Emmanuel Lutheran Church announces service details led by Pastor Henry C. Nickel. Communications indicate regular worship times and community gatherings at the church.
Governor Coke Stevenson designates the first and fifteenth of each month as Defense Stamp and Bond Days in Texas to boost war funding. A Galveston program will deploy 600 volunteers at retail counters to emphasize stamp sales on payroll days, with expansion to 210 more towns.
The notice urges Texans to participate daily in the Defense Savings Bonds and Stamps program with extra emphasis on two named days. It also promotes the film Weekend in Havana starring Alice Faye Carmen Miranda John Payne and Cesar Romero shown at Palace Theatre Sunday and Monday in Technicolor.

The Capitol Area Council held a training school for scout leaders at Bastrop State Park on February 8 to organize an Emergency Service Corps in each troop. Eligible scouts 15 and older will receive first aid life saving signaling and incendiary bomb control training and join civilian defense efforts. Morse code signaling is a focus with intensive training planned. parental consent is required and no personal danger to boys is involved.

The rural teachers of La Vaca County will hold a meeting Saturday morning February 21 at 10 o clock in the Hallsville High School Auditorium. All teachers are requested to be present and all district and county trustees are invited to attend.

Men will register for the army at Kokernot School on Monday February 16 between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. The notice calls for all eligible locals to appear and complete registration during the stated hours.
Cars may obtain their new license plates at the county tax assessor collector office in Hallettsville now but plates cannot be attached until March 1. They must be attached by April 1 or penalties apply. Fees stay the same as last year and new car buyers after January 1936 must present title certificates. Plates are all black on orange.
Brig. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey told a House committee that army induction standards would be lowered as manpower needs grow. He said many registrants with minor defects would be drafted for limited service, and that social disease deferments would be removed as new treatment facilities expand. Induction would target ages 20 to 45, with older men assigned to less strenuous tasks.
Office of the Solicitor warns postmasters and the public that endless chain schemes soliciting defense savings stamps are illegal. The notice explains that mailing such matter violates postal fraud and lottery laws and may lead to fraud orders prohibiting mail delivery to named participants. It urges newspapers to publicize the warning.

At the regular School Board meeting Monday night Supt J Mil Auld was re elected as superintendent of the Shiner Public Schools for another year. His work has been highly satisfactory and he has become popular in the school and town.
Barta Tesar aged 96 years and 28 days died Wednesday morning February 4 at 6 30 at the home of his son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Joe F Darilek He had been active until six months prior and funeral services were held Thursday at 8 30 from Eschenburg Funeral Parlor to Shiner Catholic Church Interment followed at Catholic Cemetery Rev E Bily officiated Pallbearers were Adolph Schaefer Jerry Darilek Arthur Darilek and Jim Vaclavik He was born in Netolice Czechoslovakia came to America 36 years ago living in Flatonia Hallettsville Midfield Wied East Bernard and Moravia His first wife died 29 years ago in Moravia Twenty two years ago he married Elizabeth Hundl who died three years ago He had made his home with his children since then He is survived by daughters Mrs Louis Christine Schaefer Mrs Tom Annie Dolezal Mrs Joe F Margaret Dariek and son Albert whose whereabouts are unknown The Gazette extends sympathy to the family.

A baby boy named Jerome Francis was born February 10 to Mr. and Mrs. Jerry L. Matus of Gonzales. The infant, weighing 8 1 4 pounds, was baptized at St. James Catholic Church. Grandparents are Lud Matus. Also, Robt W Young welcomed a son last Friday named Sharp Olen in the local hospital.
A light rainfall totaling about 0.41 inch fell over the past two days. The moisture is welcome but not deep enough to penetrate soil, leaving concerns about adequate groundwater and agricultural needs in the near term.

Funeral services for Vlasta Waldrep of Shiner, beloved wife of C. J. Waldrep, were held after a Monday night death at 12 10 AM. Born May 22 1894 she lived in Shiner all her life and worked at Wolters Bros. Drud Store and the Shiner Creamery. Her civic work included the Shiner Garden Club and Methodist Church activities. The funeral, led by Rev W Perry with assistants, drew a large procession to the city cemetery.
Washington officials assign school teachers to distribute sugar rationing books to every person and to crack down on hoarders by withholding sugar until stocks run low. Each person will receive stamps for about 12 ounces of sugar per week, with 130 million books issued within weeks. One applicant per family signs the amount held, and hoarded sugar over two pounds per person is designated as hoarded.
